Interesting thing happened lately. I have a free listing on Yelp because, why not.
Every now and then there will be a good lead that comes in and I'll message them asking for more info on their events.
Almost always, the lead simply ignores the message ---- until recently a lead contacted me via my phone telling me they never received a response from me on Yelp.

Ahhhh .... this isn't a situation where if you don't advertise with Yelp, they'll not send your message to the lead right?
Because I have heard rumors that Yelp will hide your reviews if you don't advertise with them.
HHheemmmmmmm.................. Smile Smile Smile

Yelp is it's own little world. With it's own set of dumb rules.

The review thing is fairly simple but annoying.
If the person leaving the review is not active on Yelp (even if it is a verified account) they hide the review.

Last I looked (about 6 months ago) Yelp doesn't do email notifications of yelp messages unless you have a paid account.

At my day job, I work for a startup that deals in home improvement lead generation. Yelp is in that market space, and you would be amazed how much hate there is for yelp - Home Advisor more so, but nobody likes Yelp.
Yelp's business model is based on extortion, give us money or we won't let you control your online presence. Messaging a lead is something you can only do if you have a paid account, and while Yelp doesn't exactly hide good reviews on free listings, they certainly don't do anything to help them show up.

Leads our contractors get from Yelp are basically:
James B.
I need help with A/C

That's it. That lead is worthless. Some of the time you get an email address and some of the time you get a phone number, but mostly Yelp wants you to communicate through their own systems, mostly so they can do exactly like Nash said (stop messages from reaching clients) to force you to pay.
Think inside the box. . . it's less crowded.

Thanks for confirming. They have every right to extort their customers caz they created the playing field. That's fair and square to be honest.
