The $12.50 GT Speedreader is a good alternative recommendation at that price point. Decks like The Marksman Deck (Luke Jermay) and Boris Wild Deck offer a lot more (because they incorporate a stacked deck system), but also come in at triple that price point, and they have features (and markings) that the average magician won't need. |

I doubt very much that many of you will agree with me but, I vote for the Deland Deck.
Not a familiar back design which some will say draws unnecessary attention and younger guys will prefer what is being released in current times. My reason for liking the Deland Deck so much is the historical value, clever markings and method, and that so much can be done with it. The Deland Deck is marked like crazy, stacked, and stripped so the possibilities are endless. The clock design is for me, a comfortable type of marking. In addition, perhaps I should mention that the Deland Deck is not only the first trick deck I ever owned (or tied with the Svengali deck) but one of the first tricks I ever owned so brings back fond memories of my beginnings with this wonderful hobby. |

The Deland was also my first marked deck. I learned about stripper cards using it and Si Stebbins.
Now, I need a better reading deck since my eyes are not as young as they used to be. |

Myself, I would like to see a deck of them in person just so I can judge for myself before ordering them online. I have noticed many different opinions for favorites and that is a good thing. Also, I believe Enders started a thread somewhere with comparison of different decks and I have much respect in his thoughts on things. |

As I wait for the Maiden-back deck from Penguin to arrive, my Ghost Cohorts from Ellusionist arrived today. They are fairly easy to read, especially if your routine(s) allow you a bit more time to examine the card (placing on the table for example). Their only real issue is distinction between the Kings and 10's. But I have ~young eyes so others may find the design a bit difficult. Thin stock, single marking system.

Diamond Jim decks are also worth a look. Also DMC Elites, obviously. Or anything else by Phill Smith.
I’m not a fan of any of the bicycle marked decks. For me, the variety of decks around these days makes using a back design that’s dedicated to the purpose a better bet than trying to retrofit a marking scheme to a “well known” deck. |

On ease of reading - DMC elites can be read from anywhere from six inches to six feet away easily, and you can read them instantly without much (if any) practice; they’re readers, not a “marked” deck if that makes sense, i.e. the identity of the card is literally written on the back, not encoded in some way like with the Deland deck.
Both the DMCs and the Diamond Jim deck are a bit like magic eye puzzles - once you know what you’re looking for you can see it instantly but they’re both almost invisible until you know. There’s a dotted-back tenyo esp deck that’s marked in a similar sort of “optical illusion” way, but they have the property of not being readable unless you’re more than three feet from them - at least to my eyes |

I have the v4 DMC Elites and agree these are easy to read when you know the optical secret. There is also a pack of gaffs you can buy to use with the v4 which adds to their versatility. I believe the v5 are also designed to be used with the Mnemonica stack?

The best marked deck in my opinion is the DMC Elites. It takes a little practice to learn the optical system but once you learn it you have no problems reading the cards from a long way.
Another plus is that because of the construction of the marks the closer a spectator looks at the back the harder the marks are to see. |

Even though the v4 has the gaff deck to support it, I use the v5, given I do some Mnemonica effects and am trying to build more. I have most of the decks listed above, as well some home made Bike mark-ups, but the v5 trumps the lot! Soooo easy to read, yet specs have no idea! Given I also need them to be fairly obvious (ageing eyesight), a few are OK, but the DMC (v4 & v5) are far superior, IMO. My only reservation is that they are a little pricey, and so too are the passports that can be bought with them (small book of tricks using their system). Nonetheless, I still see value in owning them.

Still cheaper than the ultimate bicycle deck. And also good to faro!

I did buy the passport as part of a bundle which worked out cheaper, but probably find them harder to read than the deck itself as the book(lets) are pretty small, so the text itself is also small…
