Why did the coins go across? BECAUSE WE CAN MAKE THEM GO ACROSS. That's all. We also can vanish them, make them appear, pass them through a hand/cloth/tabletop/closed fist [add what you want here], make them change colours/sizes, pass them through a bottleneck etc. We do all these because WE CAN. If we could make them fly, levitate, talk, dance or anything else crazy, WE WOULD. I remind you we sometimes hang them on invisible hooks (isn't that, when we think about it, the most stupid idea ever??)...
Now, let every magician find a patter to explain the absurd fact of hanging them... To my humble point of view, the best magic is when you DON'T need patter. When coins go across, change colours or are passed through the bottle, you could be from Tumbuctu and perform for a Malamut audience, they wouldn't need to know that Bobby-had-to-reach-Melissa-in-the-other-hand-in-order-to-do-his-husbandly-duty-before-the-mother-in-law-pops-in... They would get the point, I'm pretty sure... My two cents... Phedon

You could more efficiently transfer the coins by hand like everybody else does. If you could really send them by magic, WHY are you doing much less showing that? The standard joke about because I can involves belt sizes and ... well showing off which is disliked in polite company. You probably know the joke about the guy with the big red car told by the women at the party. Let's pretend you did your homework and look at the next lesson: How do you know when the coin vanishes? How do you know where the coin will appear? How do you deal with the times when you miss? How do you deal with the times when something goes wrong with the magic?

The question of why the coins went across could easily be asked as part of the Character Interview. All the questions and motivations that Jonathon is asking (providing) are tool steel for character development.
Ask your character... How do you know? How do you cope? What do you WANT? When you think about why YOUR coins go across, think about what YOUR character is thinking. Then live it. If you're given the choice between presenting little magic tricks or providing an interactive memoriable experience that may also include some meaning; something that spectators may remember forever...well, what do you WANT?
Will you walk into my parlour? said the Spider to the Fly,
Tis the prettiest little parlour that ever you did spy; The way into my parlour is up a winding stair, And I've a many curious things to show when you are there. Oh no, no, said the little Fly, to ask me is in vain, For who goes up your winding stair -can ne'er come down again. |

Wsduncan-> Where can I find this e-book by Michael Close? Thanks a lot.
Jonathan-> When I'm sending a coin across, I think about my moves. I want them to be natural, flawless. I want them to draw no suspicion. I want them (audience) NOT to be able to think anymore, I want them to feel there's something wrong with what they're experiencing. I just imagine that the coin really travels, magically, to the other hand. Now, why do I do this? Because the concealments and the false transfers I know enable me to perform some deceptive moves to the lay audience. And that these moves fit well in this: making coins travel from one hand to the other. Why this particular effect? because making coins travel invisibly from a closed (or open!) fist to the other is impossible. And since it is impossible, I perform this to make it possible. That's the real reason: we're making the impossible possible. We're breaking laws of physics. A coin of a given size CANNOT pass through a bottleneck whose diameter is smaller than the coin. A half-dollar CANNOT turn into an english penny. A card inserted in the middle of the pack CANNOT jump to the top. A borrowed dime CANNOT vanish only to reappear into a sugarpacket which has been in view the whole time... And yet... My thoughts. Phedon

By March of that year I was doing three 30-45 min shows a week in the dorm room and that continued for the next few terms when I moved from the dorms to the apartments. Then there was the material I would show during quiet times when hosting the computer lab for a few terms, at lunch with peer students and later on doing some magic for clients as a computer consultant. Yes I did do some magic informally at a local bar but decided to cool that when folks coming over asking to see a trick got in the way of my social activities. Real world... all the way through here. Real audiences? Yes and much more critical and vocal about what they liked and also more open to discussions of character and motivation and aesthetics. Nothing like getting notes from actors in training and theater techies and philosophy students and literature students immersed in their studies. And yes these are the folks who would bring over their friends for the next show a few days later and request (or not request) items. A very fast way to lose all that "magician oriented" stuff and focus on what folks like. Also a great source of ideas for stories and prop themes etc.

I agree magic is powerful stripped down and direct, but that doesn't mean that's the only legitimate way to present. There's a choice. And I think imagination and creativity are certainly welcome. Why did the chicken cross the road? is a fairly universal joke, and I think many audiences would enjoy seeing it presented. The challenge would be in the writing, most definitely, and that's something I think a lot of magicians avoid simply because they don't have that background and are afraid to put themselves out there, creatively. This is a creative art and fear needs to be left at the wayside, I say, I say... well, I suppose I quote, I quote Foghorn Leghorn. I think this would be a fun magician challenge, too. Any takers? |

How does the performer react when the audience insists they can see the coins still in the sending hand? Half a story premise. Been thinking about a routine where the coins are different when in the other hand... implying they change on the way over or look silver when in your right hand and something else when held by your left hand. Both hands... again that's for them to see more than lines to say. The guy doing a FISM act with the ribbon seems to have the backstage mechanics for presenting that premise. He has cards and coins changing as openly crossing the line. Bravo!

As they realize what they see on your open hand? If any "story to be told" maybe a few words while setting the props in place. Some distinct line or gesture in the item helps when folks want their friends to see you do a specific item. A cue they can use to request the item. In the old-old cap and pence trick there are a few words about a box of dubloons - but the coins used are clearly not antique Spanish gold. The lines get the box with the coins and cap onto to the table. An antique coin purse with antique silver dollars and one penney works as well today. Tales of Nate Leipzig, Dai Vernon, or Tony Slydini are optional.

Good questions but I don't have answers yet. For me, I start looking at a bunch of chicken stuff, including the already posted medals, for inspiration, and think about story, yes, and chickens I have known. Go through my collection of animal coins, figures, etc., and see what I already have and how I might use it. Then decide on a routine and amass further appropriate props, as inexpensively as possible. Costume consideration, too. I did a little chicken research last night. And I've just started thinking about routines it could lead into, and how it could fit into a set/show. How would you guys begin? |

I would take one of those hen coin/medals and do a Coin Roll....while reciting the following line:
"IT'S POULTRY IN MOTION" :-) :-D Poultry = Poetry...get it :-D Yeah, I know...corny pun it is....but funny I think |

Yes, I get it. Good one. As a matter of fact the first "chicken crossing road" joke I selected from those I found last night was:
"What do you call a chicken crossing the road? Poultry in motion." |
