Daren,
That was very nicely done. As you've probably discovered, this is an extremely strong effect for lay audiences. Do you happen to know how this is supposed to differ from Jerry Sadowitz's "The More Things Change"? I've been performing the Sadowitz effect for decades. (I performed it on Paul Daniels' TV show in the 1980s.) What I do is almost identical to what you did. Sincerely, Darwin Ortiz |

Hi Darwin,
Paul teaches this trick on his recent Penguin Live Lecture. He mentions that it is based on a more advanced Jerry Sadowitz effect that he first learnt in the early 1980s. He also mentions that the trick is published somewhere in Harry Loyrane's Apocolpyse. If you have the bound volumes, it can be found in Vol. 19, No. 9, page 2,689. I'm curious, do you know what the name of the Sadowitz effect is and where it is published? Paul doesn't mention this in the above video lecture. Marty |

Jerry Sadowitz's effect The More Things Change as mentioned by Darwin, was published in Alternative Card Magic.

Thanks, Claudio. I thought it might be in Alternative Card Magic, or one of the other books written by Peter Duffie and Jerry Sadowitz during the 80s.

Indeed Marty. Most those books were combined into one as Card Zones and published by Martin Breese.

Hi Darwin,
I believe there are only a couple of differences, these are: The displaying of the cards, sadowitz' keeps the displays looking congruent, using elm**** type displays throughout Gordon's uses an a****** spread The way the cards come out of the pockets is also different, sadowitz' has a discrepancy, whilst Gordon' gets rid of the discrepancy by adding in an extra move at a critical moment at the end. Thank you for that Dan.
Mr. Gordon's routine can be found published in his fine book, Quidnunc. |

I learned the Sadowitz effect not long after he first published it. I made a couple of small changes. For example, I noticed that the breast pocket card isn't switched and therefore can be left sticking out of the pocket. I also added a pocket-to-pocket transfer to eliminate the discrepancy of removing two cards from the same pocket.
It doesn't surprise me that those touches may have occurred to others including, apparently, Paul Gordon. But I don't think those small touches plus an Ascanio spread justify crediting the routine to Paul Gordon. I posted here to see if I was missing something. It appears that I wasn't. This isn't "based on" the Sadowitz trick. It is the Sadowitz trick. None of this should obscure the facts that it's a great effect and Daren did a great job performing it. Sincerely, Darwin Ortiz |

Thanks for your perspective on this, Darwin. And thanks for sharing your performance, Daren.
Paul Gordon is a good magician and has created some excellent, original card magic. He's also very friendly and generous with his time. But, he does have a bad habit of publishing minor variations of other people's effects. His books are full of them. This behaviour could be forgiven in someone younger and less experienced, but Paul really should know better. I saw him have a run in with John Bannon a few years ago over, essentially, the same issue. I think the trick in question was "Royal Scam" or one of his other "fractal" effects. Bannon was less than impressed. John then published a variation of one of Paul's packet tricks, and used it as an opportunity to have a dig at Paul. I think he said that the original was half baked and underdeveloped. Not a particularly classy response, but I do understand his frustration. Having met Jerry on a couple of occasions, I'm sure he'd be less polite about the situation! I highly doubt he would have given Paul his blessing to publish this. It's a real shame for the card magic community that Jerry isn't more open to sharing his work with others. He is a phenomenal sleight of hand artist. His self published manuscripts are great, but almost impossible to buy. Situations like this have probably contributed to his guarded approach, and I don't blame him. Marty |

I agree totally with Marty Jacobs.
This is a minor, and I emphasise, minor, variation on a truly outstanding original effect created by Jerry Sadowitz. |

"...the skilled technician or performer might even say "I claim no credit for originality; this is how I _do_ such and such..." but the change in handling of the tricks, sleights, etc. are infinitesimally small, one wonders why the 'author' doesn't just continue _doing_ them his way, rather than re-write what is already history." - JS

Thanks to Darwin for the clarification. and to Marty for his points.
It is good that finally Paul Gordon is giving some credit to Jerry. Although the idea that he has simplified Jerry's handling is silly. Another point to add: I think Jerry developed the routine as a young man. Later he has criticising his routine. (In The Crimp, I think) Jerry's routine was a version of Vernon's Travelers, where four signed cards travel to four different pockets. I think Jerry's criticism of his routine was that his version cluttered a clear effect by introducing the transformation idea. (I'm thinking of an idea by Carlyle I think - can the effect be simply described in a sentence?) But - if Darwin has used the routine for years, he will probably disagrees! It maybe should be said that there are versions that use just the four aces. I doubt this is an improvement on Vernon. But see Larry Jennings Up In Smoke. John Carney's Bullet Train. and Towse's Three Times and Out. |
