To me, when I think of Armstrong landing on the moon I imagine him planting the flag. I don’t know why they would leave that part out, other than thinking it may help ticket sales outside the USA.
Hollywood is good at trying to change history and I’ve lost all confidence in them producing anything based on pure facts. They have always tried to force their own worldview on the viewers. More lately it seems. I personally don’t see it working that good for them, but I’m sure they think they know best. Tom

And I am remembering why I thought that was such a good thing.
"Speaking of which, I'm surprised there is no controversy that a Canadian actor is playing Armstrong. Oh well, just give it more time." If this isn't you drawing an equivalence what is it exactly?

... and here I thought I was worried about the conspiracy theory crowd...
I still recall the day I met Beaker from the Muppets. He said to me "Meep, meep, mee mee mee Meep!", and that has made all the difference.

Trailer looks good. Not going to weigh in on the controversy. But one who did was Buzz Aldrin, 2nd man on the moon, who slammed the movie. As I recall, he bragged about being to first to pee on the moon. I DON'T want to see that, even for historical accuracy! Lynn

Everyone is forgetting the money angle. Hollywood is driven more by money than ideology. The film IS about the first man to step on the moon. The reality IS that he was an American and two of the biggest shots endlessly replayed when it happened were the first step and the flag planting. Film is a worldwide market. China is a huge piece of that. Making it too much of an American accomplishment might have limited it's play in other countries. I doubt it was ideology that drove the omission, but more likely the idea that you get more worldwide revenue when you low-key the truly American dominance of landing on the moon and make it a story of one man. Of course, it took hundreds of people to happen, but that's not the story angle. Planting the flag is the key visual that America did it before anyone else did. And, a reminder to all other viewing countries of our dominance in space and many other areas.

There was a flag. I saw the recording they did on tv.

I think the flag will be seen. They're just not going to feature the planting of the flag.
As far as Buzz in concerned, since everything had to be done in the suit, I doubt you'd see anything.

So I went and saw First Man. Ed is correct, the flag WAS shown, but not it being planted. As to whether the short view of it in the distance was added because of the controversy, I don't know. I haven't seen anything said about that.
As to the movie. It was very slow moving and not great although my wife loved it. I'm not a big fan of Ryan Gosling. He has one acting style. If you enjoy long pensive moments with an occasional half smile from Ryan, you might like it. It seemed fairly accurate historically. |
