I have many used decks of cards. cards that have just become unusable, finishes worn down, damaged decks thru practice, etc. so I was wondering what can I do with the old cards? I already use some to make gaff cards, but it seems like I have more, and more decks piling up.
So, what do you do with your old/used decks? |

"Depends on where you live!

When I was doing Card Warp, years ago, I would pick up half way decent decks in thrift shops etc. I would grab a handful from various decks, until I had about 52. When I did the trick. "they" would say, "The backs are all different!" I would reply, "When you buy your cards at yard sales, you can't be too particular!!!"
When they saw what I did with them, I got a good laugh!

I hate to sound unsophisticated in view of the responses here, but I just toss them. Maybe it's because I'm a newbie and when cards get warped, bent, lose their coating, I find that using them to learn new things is more difficult than it should be. For example, just yesterday, using a warped and well-used deck I tried to learn triple lifts. When I tried to speed up to a realistic pace I came up with four cards as often as I came up with three. I changed to a new Tally-Ho deck and the my result improved significantly, although not perfectly...yet.
In summary, just toss them and buy your cards by bulk, e.g., at least a dozen. I can practice with a deck for a month or more, which gives me a lot of value for a $3 deck of cards. I also started using Bicycle factory seconds that amount to a dollar and change per deck. They are quite good. But, that's just my opinion. PS What is card warp? Sounds like an old Twilight Zone.

Hi Ted!
Card Warp is a trick with cards. (It's not a card trick!!) I've known or Knew most of the top "cardicians", over the years. I enjoy watching a cardician "work", but, a cardician, I'm not! When I was a teenager, I read, no, studied, Erdnase. I learned the flourishes, but, decided that a 16 year old gambler, wasn't going to make it! So, I learned to do the white glove split fan productions, and tried to be "swayve & deboner". I wasn't. An agent said to me, "If you can make 'em laugh, I'll get you work!" I did, and, he did. Now, I'm 86, and, don't even do card warp anymore. It's a very visual trick, and, "gets 'em! I suggest that you ask one of the guys in the "card room", Someone should be able to help. It does take a modicum of skill, but, nothing knuckle busting. (Hey! If I could do it, you should have no trouble!

P.S. I "broke in" a deck for the split fans in 1951, After that meeting with the agent, I quit the white glove stuff, and, used the deck for fancy shuffles. I used that deck for FIFTY + years, on the road, and, it still "works"! (I think it knows the routine!)
When I simply MUST do a card trick, I use my old friend, the late George McAthy's "Insurance Policy". (I've worn out a "few" of them!)

Thanks Dick, much appreciated. Card warp is a bit too sly for a newbie like me. I'll just tuck it away until I develop some skills.

If you remember "Twilight Zone", yer an old geezer like me! (I'm 86, I should be 87, but, I was sick a year.) I just got started sooner than you! (1938)
I think that's a wise move! (The old Latin "wise saying" was "Festina Lente" (Make haste slowly). With age, comes wisdom! Yr's, 'til the deck is shuffled............. O

If they are complete decks, even though they are worn, you might find that places like nursing homes and retirement centers would appreciate them.

If you do or want to do any tricks that destroy cards, being able to practice on decks you don't care about is a good thing. That means Card Warp, any card fold, any T&R card. If you are learning to split cards for making gaffs, you can practice on the old cards until you get it figured out.
Aldo Colombini had a gag where he'd walk out holding a card with its face toward him and ask a person in the front to name any card. When they get it right, it is a miracle. When (much more often) they get it wrong, he pulls out a gallon-size Ziploc bag full of folded-up cards, folds the one he's holding and drops it in, saying "one of these days, it is going to look like a miracle." If you want to do that gag, you have decks of cards to fold up and drop in there. If you want to learn fortune telling with cards, designate one deck for your learning deck. Write the meanings on the cards (get Julian Moore's book on cartomancy, really). Another deck can be your working deck. The clear age of the cards implies more experience than would be true of a brand new deck of cards. Just a few ideas. -Patrick |

The late Patrick Page, who worked. wearing a kilt, and was booked in many "working men's clubs" in London, on Saturday nights, had a similar gag.
The bill at these stag evenings, was usually a novelty act like magic, or juggling, a stripper, and an MC. The magician was often the MC. Pat would come on holding a card, its back to the group, shouting, "Name a card, name a card!" Someone would name a card. Pat would look directly at him, and say with a big smile, "You're @#$%in' wrong!"

Just throwing this out there, an old card in a new deck can make a handy and fairly discreet locator card.
Basically invisible to the spectators, and easy to work around if you're doing an effect that doesn't require it.
Think inside the box. . . it's less crowded.

OR, you could use the old deck, with ONE NEW CARD! HEE HEE
For seventy years, I've tried to do an EFFECT. (I couldn't do even one!) Then, a wise young lad, whom I've been mentoring, told me that an EFFECT is: "what the spectator perceives". He said, "Try doing a TRICK! I did. He was right. Then, I checked Dariel Fitzkee's "The Trick Brain". Fitzkee lists 19 EFFECTS, but none of them can be DONE! (The magician can only PERFORM A TRICK, WHICH, IF WELL PERFORMED, MAY CAUSE THE SPECTATOR TO PERCEIVE AN EFFECT.)

Depending on their condition, you can always use them to make some gaff cards, double faces, double backs, make your own gimmick, etc. However, if you really can't do anything with them, sell them to a thrift shop! I love raiding thrift shops for unique decks, no matter what condition they're in. Let us know what you decide on!
Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it now. Boldness has genius, power, and magic at its core.

So you need something to with old cards. Why not spice things up in the bedroom?
I'll tell you why not: paper cuts.

I save them for Warp One, it's a card warp effect by David Ren Jenkins. They also make great sh**t c**ds, for your good decks. I also love to throw them and stick them into the ceiling at my office
