Hey, guys, I'm thinking on making my own cylinder fo r the cylinder and coins routine of John Ramsay; does anybody have any ideas or has anybody ever made this cylinder? Thank you for your advices

The original was cardboard. Just a cardboard tube container with the ends cut off.
Depending on the look you want for the trick - an obsolete bill rolled to size then glued or map or letter ... Getting fancy with Delrin is also doable.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

Afcaballero, yes they are made by several people and available on the magic market.

I went to a shoe repair shop and explained what I wanted. It came out perfect and only cost me five dollars

I've seen versions with a rolled up bill. It seemed like an interesting idea, but for me, I don't want the tube to be interesting. In fact I want it maximily boring, it's a trick about the coins* not the tube. A toilet paper tube might stand out too much, because toilet. I'm thinking of a dark colored heavy paper tube. Just my thoughts, if you feel definitely, please let me know.

I like the dollar bill the best for a stack of quarters. Michael Skinner uses it for his marketed effect “Wisper” IIRC. To me, the dollar is not “interesting” as much as it makes sense to be used in an effect that already uses money. Anything else looks “proppy” to me (like the pleather cone that Johnson included with my Johnson stack of quarters). I do have a set of Ike Dollars with a Delrin cylinder that is a nice set (Airship Magic made mine). It does look more like a storage tube for the coins in my opinion but still a tad more like a prop than a dollar bill would look. In the end, they both work great and I guess if you are going to do magic, people are going to expect to see “props” or other items that most people do not carry.

Whisper is a Roger Klause effect. It uses a dollar bill rolled into a cone that fits over a stack of quarters. A penny is used in place of the cork bits as used by Ramsey and others. Originally Todd Lassen made the stack of quarters used with it. It is a well choreographed routine (what of roger's wasn't) and is presented as impromptu. Borrow four quarters, a penny and a dollar bill and off you go!
As to making your own cylinder try using stir paper (page or cover from a magazine, or the tube from a Push-Pop (buy Hannibal's DVD and see a well motivated routine using the Push-Pop tube It's on volume 1 of the 2DVD set "The Truth from a Liar"). I like the idea of having the leather or plastic (Delrin) cylinder look as if it was the caring case for the coins. You can make the leather tube look like a carrying case for the expensive, rare coins by cutting a wooden stopper for both ends of the tube. Open one end and pour out the coins, push out the other making the tube and off you go into the effect.

The tube as a storage for the coins makes sense. In fact I have some coins stored in tube right now!

Which is exactly why is use the Scotty York Cylinder. This is exactly how it's introduced, as a Coin Holder for my precious Antique Silver Coins, and taken apart right in front of their naked steaming eyes:
The Ambitious Card http://www.theambitiouscard.com/aitem.cfm?itemid=43 It IS a holder for my Silver Coins, and the entire effect. They don't leave the Cylinder/Case unless performed/practiced. My other Coin Sets have their own Purses, or Portfolios. What you cannot see is a long, solid (filled with a cork perhaps?) leather "plug" affixed to the bottom cover attached to the snap straps that goes a good ways up into the Cylinder to keep everything closer together. I love my Half Dollar size Cylinder so much, I just ordered another one for my Morgan Set yesterday. Frank is wonderful to work with!!! |

If your performing character is the type to have special holders to keep your props neat categorized, the Scotty York Cylinder is a perfect fit for you! In real life, I keep all my performing stuff super squared away in their own holders and boxes, but my performing character is quite a bit looser than that. So, as cool as I think the Scotty York Cylinder is, I can't use it in performance.
