Yes as some have wisely said above, tricks with many steps and procedures and/or much handling of the deck are what magicians go for just as they go for an ACAAN. A spectator would never choose a thought of card at a NUMBER. Making a big deal of a number, IMHO, just detracts from the mindreading. It deflates the balloon of magic into a magic by numbers game.
So magicians tend to go for, and are puzzled by tricky, procedural tricks. The problem with this is spectators see them as merely long puzzles. The psychological forces and fishing are, to me, in need of psychiatric help , hehe. The mindreading part of it needs to be played up as much as it can, convincingly. We need simple, but wild methods to create magical mind reading. |

Totally agree with you maven, right on point.
Though magicians might feel different and fine as to these sorts of presentations, I think many times specs are lost in all the nooks & crannys of it, and yes that's when it becomes a bit more "puzzling" than magical. But when you can do it all really well, it certainly looks quite a bit better. And for what it's worth along these lines, the old "ID" usually plays and comes across as good as anything, and is easier than most...still. I hope to always remember that while swimming through all the many options out there and mentioned here in this string.
