I showed my Ambitious Card egg bag to some old-timers at the club. They were convinced that I had a Fabric Manipulations bag. It's nice!

I guess I should feel very flattered, considering two of the above mentioned manufacturers had one my egg bags prior to releasing their "own" designs. This is why you will notice some uncanny similarities when comparing their egg bags to mine. I know that I do not own the exclusive rights to the egg bag, however, I do have the exclusive rights to manufacture Johnny Thompson's egg bag. (Sorry, I had to finally publicly get that off my chest.) That being said...I personally hand-make each of my Legacy Egg Bags according to Johnny Thompson's exact specifications. However, if someone prefers a customized egg bag, utilizing their own size, color, design, or fabric, I am happy to accommodate. Just contact me for a quote. Lynetta |

I wonder what has Johnny Thompson done that was not done with the egg-bag that was not available and/or in print before.
I have one of Lynetta's wonderful bags (via Denny & Lee’s brick and mortar shop). I have said elsewhere that Lynetta’s bag is amongst the best made. It is a professional prop for the serious worker. However, other than actual size, proportion (length to width) and maybe selection of material used, what makes it a Johnny Thompson version of the Miller/Malini bag? It can’t be the nature of the opening to the “necessary” working of the bag. Tarbell clearly shows the inside quarter circle opening to the “necessary” in his instructions on making the Malini egg bag. Heck, this little tidbit was published by Tarbell in 1924 (well before Miller reinvented the Malini bag!). See page 112 of volume 5. My understanding of the double wall on both sides of the bag was a development of Charley Miller and Harry Riser’s wife (along with input from Harry and Persi Diaconis). But even that concept was being used in the construction of other types of egg bags available. One “Standard” in my collection dates to 1957 and is doubled walled both side. It comes from a shop in Panama City, Panama. I know that Mr. Thompson takes credit for the rounded outside corners of the Miller/Malini egg bag, On the Stevens Great Magic Video #29, he says to Charlie Miller that his “contribution” to the egg bag is the “rounded” outside corners. Mr. Thompson may have well contributed the rounded outside corners to the Malini/Miller egg bag but it is not his invention. An egg bag was sold in the late 1800’s (Standard type) that had beautifully rounded corners. Further, within Mr. Thompson’s lifetime, Jack Miller (no relation to Charlie) made and sold an egg bag through Tannen’s that had rounded corners. Jack Miller’s bag was also a version of the Standard egg bag not a Malini. So what makes an egg bag a Johnny Thompson egg bag? Mr. Thompson brings years of experience to egg bag use and knows what works in making the bag easy to perform with. Thus he configured a bag based on that experience. That unique configuration of elements (size, shape, nature of “necessary, and type and weight of material, etc) that makes it a Thompson bag. I believe that Lynetta makes the bag according to these specifications.

I still have the question;
How many "styles" of egg bag are there? What makes them different? What is the difference between a "Malini" bag and a "Johnny Thompson" bag?

Ed, Style of bags easily available today basically include the Tarbell bag, the Sterling/Mardo bag, and the Malini/Charlie Miller/Riser bag. There are others (eg. the Jack Miller bag, etc), but these are the most common and most readily available today.
Without going into a lot of detail here, the main difference is the location and accessibility of the opening (size, shape, and location of that all important opening). A secondary difference is the material used (pattern, silk vs wool, weight, etc.). The work in the Malini style bag is at the bottom and in one corner. The work in the Tarbell bag is across the side of the bag and the work in the Mardo bag is also on the side but constructed to be on the outside of the bag, is higher than found in the Tarbell style with a smaller access. The Johnny Thompson bag IS a Malini style bag with some modifications developed by Johnny Thompson to enhance the working of the routine, i.e., make the handling easier. The Jeff Hobson bag IS also a Malini style bag again with changes developed by Jeff Hobson over the course of thousands of performances. He has made a significant change in the materials used, the proportions (size height vs. width) and the color combination (inside to outside). Cody Fisher's bag looks like a Mardo or Tarbell bag in that it is made of a plaid material favored by the Mardo and Tarbell bags, but in fact Cody's is a Malini style bag. Of note, it seems that the Malini style bag is the most common being sold today. You want to know the difference between a Malini bag and a Thompson bag. Know that the Thompson bag is a Malini style with curved corners to the bag to make turning it inside out and vice-versa faster and easier (also found in the Hobson bag). It is a subtle difference that a professional notices and treasures but that a performer doing one show a month probably wouldn't notice or care much about. There are a couple of other differences too, but what you can really say is that the Thompson bag is a professional workers version of the Malini bag. The Tong's (Danny and Pauline) made about the only Tarbell style egg you could find. I'm not sure if they are still in business. Martin Lewis makes about the only Mardo style bag you can find today. Martin has a turn-key routine called "Golf" that uses and includes a Mardo egg bag, a proper weighted ball, and an appearing golf club. it is a solid, worker's routine. My old friend John Novak wrote the "Egg Bag Book" that discusses the many different styles and different workings and history of egg bags. Good resource if you can find it. I haven't even addressed the Sam Berland multiple speciality egg bags used to produce glasses of beer amongst other things, or Grant's Comedy Egg Bag that turns into a chicken as a finale, or the net face/visible egg bag. I could go on and on.

The ambitious card egg bag is not the same as the Fab Manip bag.
Ours is at bit larger and has an additional indicator to help orient the bag. It's also a different material. The extra indicator is simple, goes completely unnoticed by a spectator but is so easy to see/feel compared to the standard indicator. I had our bags made a bit larger so it was easier to reach in. If anyone is interested, PM me as I think I have a few more remaining. They will not be made again. The shop that kindly made them has shut down, permanently.

Here ya go Ed!
THE HOBSON EGG BAG The high price of this item might lead you to believe that you are getting something extra special with this Egg Bag set and in some ways you are. Jeff Hobson is one of the world’s most experienced entertainers and he has created an egg bag design which seeks to get round some of the potential problems sometimes associated with this classic prop in order to give you the best chance of creating the perfect egg bag illusion. So, what are the differences between the JH egg bag and all the others? Firstly the size. The bag is wider than it is long, which is the opposite way round from other bags. The reason is so that you can hold the top of the bag with both your hands with the fingers inside and still leave enough room for a spectator to slip their hand into the bag in order to pull it inside out. Secondly, the colour. This bag is bright red on the outside, to ensure that it shows up on stage,and black on the inside, as this is the very best colour to mask the bulge of the egg when it is secretly in the internal pocket. Thirdly, the material. Rather than have the bag made of slick thin material, the JH bag is made of a more bulky cloth which is easy to handle but which prevents any tell tale sign of the egg being inside when the bag is supposed to be empty. Fourthly, the secret pocket opening. Although this is cut diagonally across one bottom inside corner, the shape of the cut away is curved rather than straight. Jeff says he feels this makes it easier to get the egg inside and also makes absolutely sure that the egg will always be visible in the bottom of the bag when it falls out. Fifthly, the egg. Is it extremely light and made from a bright white hard resin material. It moves move around well inside the bag as required but because of the very light weight, no movement can be seen through the cloth. Now on to the routine. Jeff explains that he wants you to create your own presentation and patter rather than copying his. He then goes on to run through the handling required for his routine. This is very simple and unlike many other routines, Jeff does not try to overprove that the bag is empty. This shows someone who knows that in a commercial show things need to move on at a reasonable pace and that there is no value in having twelve different ways of showing the bag is empty when two or three will do. His routine is essentially the same set of moves repeated twice. The second time he likes to apparently get the spectator to reproduce the egg from the bag, which gives plenty of opportunity for you to develop lines and gags with the assisting spectator. Compared to the other egg bags we have reviewed in this article, this one is the most thorough. It's a well designed bag and a routine which is very commercial provided that you can put enough of your own patter and personality into it. I still feel that the price is rather high and that you are being made to pay perhaps for the fact that Jeff Hobson’s name is on this product . However, if you are serious about putting an egg bag routine into your stand up or stage act, and are prepared to put in the time to create your own presentation, this is probably the one you should invest in. STAR RATING: !!!!! Copy & Paste is your friend! Doug |

I do have to agree with you Doug. I've had mine for about 5yrs now and I do have to say this is the best egg bag I've had. The price is a bit high but you get a very well made bag made of raw silk.

I have been wanting to upgrade to the Hobson Egg Bag for some time. Does anyone know when Jeff will open his store back up? I believe his website says the office will be closed until fall, so hopefully it will be soon. It seems only some downloads are available now.

I own several Hobson bags. I just returned from a gig, where I performed with the bag. I like it because it's the smoothest-handling Malini-style bag. Combine that with my handling and it kicks serious butt.

I have very limited amount of stock which is why my shop has been closed for a while. However, if someone needs one, you can let me know
at magicmail@mac.com and I can put you on a list unless, of course, I have that particular color in stock. Thanks for your patience.
