I just don't get it. Why do terrorist groups like isis and al-qaeda form? Is it a social, religion, sex or country motive?

Other than middle-eastern/arabic culture with Islamic history that predates our country - what areas or groups are you wondering about?

You do know there are home grown American terrorist groups right? Plus European groups that are just as dangerous. What scared you so badly about Middle Eastern groups that made you post?

Middle East also includes the root of Christianity that also predates our county, and has been used to justify many terrorist activities.
In short, religion is not the cause of terrorism. Greedy and self-serving people are, plus gullible people relying on emotion above reason. It should be noted that the internet has played a significant role in the increase of terrorist since now all weirdoes can find like-minded folks to chat with. I, personally, consider many of the actions of our current politicians in this county to be terrorism - creating fear out of lies and playing on it. I made it through Viet Nam era without a feeling of terror. Now I feel terrorized everyday by the evening news. Don't look to the Middle East - try the neighbor next door.

I think we can have a better discussion if we focus outside that one specific area with current social and political issues which we can't discuss. That area of the world has had a tough time selecting its leaders, establishing national boundaries, and growing its own functioning economies.

Dynamike's OP raises questions we should discuss. As Mr Salk mentioned ancestral lands stolen and bombed for generations, there still remains the question, "why now?" Mike mentioned nationalism and religion both; and it seems that a 'caliphate' is a kind of combination. A religious state that Isis would love to form. Why the attraction to Isis is also pretty complex. Was it suggested in the movie 'Syriana', where SOME youth feel no way out from under imperialism on all sides (no socialist countries anymore)? Revenge, desparation? What's upsetting is seeing 10's of thousands of refugees trying to flee Isis being denied sanctuary throughout Europe! One final note: Saudi Arabia (oil buddy of the US) leads the world in beheadings. Lynn

Very upsetting, keeping them out of Europe.
Yes it is.

Them meaning refugees or them who would establish a conservative Islamic government?

Those fleeing Isis often refer to them by a derogatory term, 'daesh". Using the term "daesh" can get your tongue cut out; so this is not without risk. Unfortunately, refugees also face neo-nazi gangs if they make it to Germany, Ukraine, etc. Here in the US, sanctuary is completely denied to people fleeing the terror from 8 countries (as of 9/2017)...but you may still have to worry. After all, Saudi Arabia which is NOT on the list, is notorious for growing terrorists. Lynn |
