I keep my doves in my basement. Winter is around the corner. I was thinking of a way to increase sunlight. I came across this: https://www.amazon.com/Spectrum-Light-Pa......?ie=UTF8 Any suggestions or comments?

You don't have any windows in your basement? They need to know when it is night and day. They use a calendar just like us. You will also need a dehumidifier set properly so they do not get sick from dampness, or dye from not enough moisture in the air.

I kept mine in the basement for a year, and they did very well. What you have to watch out for, a huge black bird, like a crow must have heard them from the furnace chimney. Believe it or know, I don't know how, but the black bird was in our basement. I heard some rustling and seen the bird trying to get a the doves. I grabbed a towel thought it over the bird, and took it outside and released it. I still wonder if that bird got in by going down the chimney or flying in the back door, while we were taking groceries in and out. As the basement door was directly across from the back door. He could have swooped in, but he should have hit his head at the stair case angle.

A line reads on the link I posted reads "glass filters out the beneficial components of ultraviolet rays."

Back in the mid nineties when I finished a show at a school, a teacher comes on stage to examine my birds. She told me they are not getting enough light by looking at their eyes. I regret to this day I did not stop to talk with her asking her questions and writing down her comments. Back then I was living with a friend of mine. I kept my pets in my friend's basement. It was a poor lighted area. Presently one of my bird's eye look strange. I do not know if it is from not enough light or if he got poked in the eye from a different bird.

The UV light kit does not cost much. My basement windows are not clear to see thru. They are wavy block windows.

I understand you about the crow. Back in the eighties I rented from my grandmother. I heard a sound in the furnace chimney of the basement. I opened the small door. A crow flew out of it. I used a towel also to catch him. I was thinking about using him in my magic show. I washed him in the sink to get off all the dirt. But I over done it, he droned. I called my grandmother telling her I heard a sound in the furnace chimney. She told me it was a bird before I could tell her. At least one bird flew in there when she was living there in the past.

I will order that UV light and put it on a timer. Better safe that sorry.

Thank you as always, Bill.

Check out the video. Does it make sense what she is saying about using UV light bulbs for birds? If so, does anyone think it concerns doves too?

I couldn't listen to the entire thing. Her voice got on my nerves but she is correct about windows filtering out the UV light. Windows are fine if you can open them to let in fresh air but you need the UV lights to give them what is missing.
