I am studying this great effect this week and loved the Scarne/Al Baker version (in Scarne on Card Tricks). I also am aware of the Karl Fulves version in his card tricks book. Are there other versions you find as powerful and effective?

It's unfortunately not a self-working trick, but there's a great one deck Do As I Do from Dr. Jacob Daley called "A Paradox of Pairs." Click the link to JACK below if you want to check it out.

Hello BrainMagos,
You want a self-worker with no procedural business at all? Then what about this, supposing you can put up with a gaffed deck. Make a Mene-Tekel where the pairs aren't equal, but are suit mates (Clubs/Spades and Hearts/Diamonds). Even though it's gaffed, you can show the cards with the usual riffle-forward display. I've done one card you do as I do from Scarne On Cards for probably 50 years. The problem is if they think of say a red 7 and the other red 7 is also in their half of the deck it makes for a weak finish. I've solved that by segregating the deck. It's not really a stack, both halves can be freely shuffled but I set it up so there is a red ace in each half, a red 2, etc. thereby avoiding that problem.

John Carey has a very easy one deck do as I do routine on his Handle With Carey dvd you can see it performed roughly about 6:25 in on the link provided https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tre5t1kcpjo

I'm pretty sure that Carey's routine is the same one that he generously explained on Secret Sessions.

Hi Jerskin,
I, too, like your idea of segregating the deck. But I'm wondering how you start the trick. That is, how do you make sure that you and your spectator each get exactly half of the deck, so that each card in one half will have a mate in the other half. |

Jerskin and magicfish, thanks to you both. Magicfish, I hesitate to ask this, because it's probably way beyond my current level of skill, but -- can you give me a reference for how to do a perfect cut?

And thanks to you, Warren -- I didn't scroll up far enough. So Carey's thread here is another resource for people who want to do as I do.
