Hello,
I saw a magi. I don't remember who but he sat in a chair and had some volunters tie him to the chair, then he escaped. Does anyone know where I can find this if so please let me know. Joe |

Try some Books on Houdini. Tot sure what else it might be in, but also practice is a excellent start, too. Don.

It all depends on how you are going to be tied to the chair. The best thing would (as Don suggests) be to just practice escaping from different ways of getting out.
Just remember, if you're using rope it's easier if you gain a little slack. So try to come up with a way that you can steal some slack without the person who is tying you in knowing about it. Hope this helps a little. Roslyn

The routine you describe is commonly known as the 100-foot rope escape. There's a good detailed analysis of both the trick and the audience handling involved in Burlington Hull's "Rope ties and chain releases" booklet.

Chris Angel did that on his last special. It looked like he got out too easy to me but I think it was a get out in less time than getting in thing, I don't realy remember now.
...think not that all wisdom is in your school. You may have studied other paths, but, it is important to remember that no matter who you are or where you come from, there is always more to learn.

I think the rope tie is one of the more fun escapes. It can be presented any number of ways, and I think that's what makes it so fun. When considering a rope tie, the type of rope is crucial. A nylon rope will generally be too stiff and not allow it to be tied very well. An all cotton rope will generally be too loose and let knots be tied too tight. What I use is a cotton/nylon blend rope. This allows for knots to be tied in the rope, if the spectators choose, but also allows for easy maneuverability when attempting the escape.

100 foot rope escape from a chair is one of my favorites. Tie one end to the chair to get them started and unless someone really knows what they are doing when they tie you up it is realitively easy to escape. The hard part is trying to make it look like it's tough.

Hello All
What everyone here seens to be Forgetting & I am not at all surprised by the looks of some of the replys & the misinformation out there today is that ... as an Escape Artist..... It's open season on you!!! ......If you don't have an Assistant. GET ONE & PAY THEM Well!!! I have seen many a "Pro' get into trouble doing this gag. This is not a laughing matter, People can / Will be rough on you, Are you ready?? Never work with out an an assistant who Knows you well! & knows what to look for should you get into trouble. This IS NOT Childs play, you can get hurt if not Strangeled doing this gag, (NOW do I have your Attention) As has happened to a young man a few years ago, When people left him in a room alone to Effect his escape. Read everything you can get your hands on , then begin w/ simple Rope ties by friends, Chain escapes etc But keep it simple & Builde up Knowledge BEFORE getting into Full body restraints. In the next few months my pal the legendary "Mr Escape' Steve Baker & I will be coming out w/ a series of Publications on escape work that should be of great interest to the Escape community. But Always have Intelligent /knowlegable people around you when doing ANY form of Escape Act. Michael Lee |

Many years ago, before the earth cooled and dinosaurs still roamed the earth.... I had a bad experience with the strait jacket, I wrote it up without full details in Genii.
Bottom line, the one of the jerks putting me in took the crotch strap and jerked it up so hard and tight, he gave me what is known as a "twisted testicle". For the non-medical people out there, this is a lovely condition where the little golf ball in the sack gets twisted around, cutting off the blood flow and can require amputation if untreated. I finished the show and got treatment, which is another lovely day at the park. The Nazi the hospital has hidden in the back comes out, and with darn little medication, turns the little golf ball back around... ...after several lovely squeezes to find out which way it belongs. I was in bed for three days after that, and wore a cup supporter from then on to protect those little guys. Life as an Escape Artist.... priceless |

Hello All
Well there you have it!! If you try to do any forum of Escape act "On the Cheap" , There is the great Chance that they (The Spectator's) Can & will in Marks case did , do "a number on you" & twist you up (Sorry Mark) so to speak. I have seen fellow performers in "Full Body' restraints ... either fall over & or be thrown on the floor by audiance menbers who have had to much during cocktail hour, or who simply wanted to cause you pain ...Simple as that. In the long run Injuries are NO FUN & will cost you Big time in later years just as they did Houdini Who could Not sleep unless he had a pillow supporting his Rib cage, kidney area for the rest of his all to brief life... Sounds like fun?? Bottom Line... Get an Assistent & pay em well!!! Michael Lee |

Mark...Just reading your experience made my eyes water! There are a lot of crazies out there who want to say "I tied the Escape guy up really well" and you have proved it. Although many folk might say a paid assistant is not ethical, in your case your little guys in the bag wouldn't have been strangled!
A great story, and I think this should be told to all budding Escape Artists. Mick |

Nice advice Michael.
Yes. Have an assistant to help out. When I have not had an assistant around, Even when explaining to the volunteers to allow for blood circulation and airflow. They STILL cut off Blood circulation, and have many a time almost choked me. Make sure YOU have full control over the escape. Who cares besides you if by chance you don't get out, but you don't need to kill yourself just to entertain, that is not what Escapes are all about. (Sometimes need to take my own advice on this one) Mark - Man! That Hurt me just reading it. I was wincing throughout the whole thing. Did you at least kick him in the nuts afterwards? Then again, I suppose you were in too much pain to do that. Do you want me to find him and kick him in the nuts for you? :o) Regards Wolflock

Some thoughts from a solo performer...
Audience managment and spectator selection are key factors to staying safe. Let your helpers know what they can and cant do before you start. Simple things like don't tie up my neck, don't pull me over, and getting some one to stand behind you incase you lose ballance are all key things you can do to help prevent accident. Its your job to stay safe and keep your audience in check! Also remeber your audience should not be out to get yoU! Challenge but don't offend. Make friends with your audeince. If your audience becomes your friends then your all set cause friends don't hurt friends. Finnaly drop your ego if you have one! Be a real person. Escapes in general are fairly boring. Its not about the escape its about you as a person. Be real and your audeince will respect you for it. This is just personal expeience take it as you see fit. Let the Royalty Rule James Royalty |

Just a small warning with the chair escape.
I did this on the weekend and did the usual fall, but ended up getting my elbow wedged under my ribs. This meant I bruised them quite badly during the escape. Problem was, I did this escape right at the beginning of the show. So, if you perform this escape. Please be careful. Although it is one of the less taxing escapes, there are still hidden dangers. I guess that's true of all escapes. Take care, RW

Good point. What I have done is purchased a collapsable chair then sawed the chair legs shorter therefore not as far to get to the ground when you bite the dust. Never had a spectator point out the shortness of chair. It does make a difference. C |
