I just got Copper and Silver, and which is the best VHS tape for a good routine? The package came with just one very simple trick.
thanks, Jeff |

You won't be disappointed with David Roth's expert coin videos. He has one just for gimmicks.

By "copper & silver" I'm assuming you're referring to a scotch-n-soda set, or some similar version of that effect? If I'm assuming incorrectly, please let me know.
Bobo's Modern Coin Magic (getting to be my "pat" answer it seems ) has a entire section on gaff coin effects and routines, including many effects involving C/S coins, and ]'s, which couls easily be refitted for S&S sets. I'd recommend that, as well as the Roth tape (I believe it's ECMME vol. 19, but I could wrong). What I would not recommend is a DVD called "25 tricks with Scotch-n-soda. There's like one semi-decent effect on the entire DVD, and I have a better version of that posted on my website from time to time. If you'd like to learn it, let me know, and I'll give you the page address. Best, Mike My mistake, the DVD not to get is called "Amazing Magic Tricks with a Scotch & Soda (or Dime & Penny)" by Royal Magic, not "25 Tricks with...". Mike |

I would think that the coin you got is the Copper/silver coin.
Larring Jennings had a nice routine with one in his book "The Classic Magic of Larry Jennings" David Roth goes to some detail about the Copper/silver coin on his video and his book Expert Coin Magic. Bobo's is always the safe answer to say, no one will ever argue the suggestion. If you play the suggestions given to you, you should be able to have some fun with it. |

That's funny -- I immediately assumed he was talking about a C/S coin or possibly the Ultimate Copper and Silver set. If you are indeed referring to the latter, Jeff, you'll find that just about any Scotch and Soda effect can be done with that set as well.

The direction this post is taking, someone should be setting odds and taking bets on what "copper and silver" refers to
4 to 1 that Jeff's referring to S&S or some variant coin set there of (inclusive of vodka & OJ, but not including the Ult. C/S or Mag C/S sets)... :) Best to All, Mike |

My money's on either the Ultimate Copper and Silver set or simply a C/S coin. (Am I allowed to bet twice?)

My original guess before opening the post was, just a copper silver transposition...
Having opened the post I am going for the C/S coin, if this is what you are refering to, then you really should get Bob Kohler's "International Magic Lecture" sold by http://www.internationalmagic.com in England. They may soon make this into a DVD depending on the demand. Apparently Bob is currently in the making of a coin DVD and on this he has a renewed version of the routine I refer to, simply called copper/silver/brass. I really advise you don't just limit your source of learning to DVD/Video, there are some great routines in Roth's "Expert Coin Magic" and as WildStone said in "New Modern Coin Magic". Good luck, Owen |

Mike, I'll take you up on that token bet.
What can we bet with? Maybe how many posts we have. That would interesting, if you could trade some of them over. |

I'm creeping up on some kind of milestone, so I'll keep my posts James How about wagers for effects? The winner gets one good original from each of the losers? Hmmmmm.

Oooooh! I like that idea, Mike! Hopefully, Jeff won't leave us hanging.
And Jeff, once we've got a handle on which effect it is you're asking about, I guarantee you'll be flooded with some great ideas on it's use. |

Sounds like a plan Mike. Any one else up on this?

The tension mounts...
I've been thinking about this wager thing... I'm still up for it mind you, but it makes me wonder about sharing effects with each other. I think sharing ideas is a great thing, and we could all probably do a better job of it. When it comes down to it, there aren't too many moves, sleights, or mechanics in the effects that I dream up that aren't known, at some level, to just about all of us. What then makes it "my routine"? Yes, I use classic sleights in my own way, change them to suit me, sequence them originally to produce effects that I call my own, and even invent a sleight or two of my own every now and then. However, a classic palm is still a classic palm, and a shuttle pass, no matter how high or far it flies, is still a shuttle pass. What makes an effect mine is something that no one could ever steal, or borrow without permission, or infringe upon. I make it mine with my words, my personality, my presence, and my willingness to share it with my audiences. I make it mine when I look at a coin vanish, and say to myself, wouldn't it be cool if I did it this way or that, wouldn't the spectators really enjoy seeing this or that... etc. In my opinion, secrets have little value. A great trick is nothing without a spectator to be amazed by it. And, if I'm the only one that knows how it's done, it dies with me when that day comes. My manuscript is about to be released, which I'm very happy about. It contains four original routines, and a whole bunch of my thoughts, notes, etc. etc. Stuff that's taken me some years to figure out, some stuff that I still change around and try to improve upon... just last night I had a epiphany with one of my staple effects which changed it slightly, and hopefully for the better I'm selling the manuscript for $5, which would seem to go against the sharing thing that I was just writing about, but it actually doesn't. I love magic, but if magic ceased to be a source of income, and was only my insanely compulsive & expensive hobby, I wouldn't be able to continue.... I'd be finacially ruined inside of a year Overall point - sharing is good. We can all benefit from openly sharing ideas with each other. Selling your hard work and original ideas is good, as long as you offer something of value at a reasonable and honest price. And finally.... I'm really going to enjoy winning this bet and getting originals from James and Rob Best, Mike |

It has been mentioned, and I must agree that I would check into Roth's stuff.

I'm guessing Jeff is referring to a C/S coin.
