All things being equal re the act itself (15-20 min show for say 10-20 pple), do you recommend having a hat in front where they can throw money in at any time or not giving them the opportunity to pay until the end, removing your hat and holding it in front of you for them to pay. I have been using the former but I think I should try the latter, it seems a stronger gesture. Have you tried both and noticed a difference? Thanks.

This is a huge question, with a even larger set of answers.
I have two shows for this very reason. Here are a quick run down of each show and how why I hat or don't hat. Show one- This show follow the standard principles of make them stop, make the stay, make them pay. And the idea of building a crowd with the promise. Each effect is overlapped. I start of with multiplying bananas to stop the crowd. I go into sponge balls to pull them in and build. Then I do a single rope routine that strengthens the crowd. All the time I am building up to my finale which is "the most dangerous thing your going to see to day where I risks serious physical harm". It a routine involving a animal trap. I like to mention this show is built on philosophies of Jimmy Talks a lot ideas regarding lure with spectacular. As well as Mario Morris ideas on the 3ps, Pull them in, push them back then pull back. It about 25 min long and usually gets crowd of 15 to 30. Some times when conditions are right this becomes 50+. Early days of the show I did trickle but I am now confidant in hatting at the end and it is very beneficial. Show 2- This show packs small and all the effects chosen have instant reset and multi phase where possible. Also each trick stand alone. The effects I use are, 1- Single coin routine ending in a jumbo coin production, 2- Paddle trick, I have few to choose from but I like the pat page money paddle, 3- Single rope routine, 3- 3 Balls and net, This take me about 20 to 25 min to work through and when I get to the end I just back to the signal coin routine. The crowd size is 10-20 they come and go. I chat and very free and loses with this. The coin, rope and 3 balls and net are all multi phase so I can repeat parts or cut parts at any time. After every few tricks I mention the tip bowl on the ground. So if the foot fall is there and plenty of people about I do show one. I do shows back to back for 2-3hrs. If things are quite and if the weathers a bit of I do show 2. This show come in handy early evening if parents are trying to pacify kids before meals out and evening shows. Show 2 is a little less draining and I can do for hours it can be a case of making a little money over along time. Both shows have there place but I must admit show one with hatting at the end is really working for me. I would start of looking at your location and foot fall and decide which suites best. A bit of a ramble but hope its help.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

If it is slow you do a trickle, if it is busy you do a hat.
Watch my Crowd Goes Wild blueprint: work a trickle until you have three or more groups of strangers watching, then turn them into a crowd and go for the hat. If you can't get three or more groups of strangers, then you are still doing something with the trickle. It's all about the flow. http://magicjoint.com/pages/magic-shop/t......d-promo/ -JoeJoe

I agree that space and amount of traffic determine whether to work a trickle or to hat the crowd.I would add that another factor is whether you are performing for people who are regulars, or for people you will only perform for once. There lot of wisdom in the posts above.
