Hi guys.
So I’m more of a card magician but I want to take my Mentalism up a notch, and I don’t have a very big budget. What I need is something that guesses the predictions of others, like a clipboard gimmick but cheap. Anything under $150 works. Please help!! |

No such thing. a deck of cards is pretty cheap and you can do lots of predictions.

$150 worth of some good books will go a long way.

You are trying to spring before crawling. Read the classics and learn or stick to card magic.

Try Mental Epic. There are many variations.

H&R Magic has one copy of Marc Oberon's Mental Epic Pad (which I know nothing about and can't vouch for):
https://www.magicbookshop.com/p/props-tr......epic-pad and one copy of Paul Romhany's Mental Epic Compendium (which I can say is excellent): https://www.magicbookshop.com/p/books/mental-epic-compendium Mental Epic is a three-way prediction. For a single prediction, see Paul Romhany's Dream Prediction: https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/magic/......version/ Penguin has a download called Mental Epic Envelopes, which looks interesting: http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/6961 Lots of ways to go. |

If I had 150$ and had not studied any books on mentalism yet, I would buy
- Artful Mentalism Vol. 2 - Bob Cassidy - Practical Mental Magic - Theodore Annemann - 13 steps to mentalism - Tony Corinda - Switchcraft - Elliot Bresler You can get all those books together for under 150$, and you'll get a ton of information on how to archieve just about any mental effect. Read the Bob Cassidy book first! And most importantly: do not assume that mentalism is something you can just "add to your set" just like any other magic trick. It requires a lot of study and conscious decisions about your character and your mental powers. You will need to adopt a totally different mind set, for it to truly feel like mind reading. It's not easy. But if you are ready for it, it will be a lot of fun! Good luck on your journey! |

Many nice books about mentalism are in public domain now.

Get an impression pad and a nail writer. You can predict anything, anyway, anyhow. Add some envelopes and you're a mentalist. All for less than $100. To be a super mentalist, you'll also need a blindfold and spoons. But, that's for another day.

One problem with a magician adding some mentalism to his magic act is that audience may well assume it is ALL magic tricks.
Second, preparing for the addition is analogous, in track and field, to a sprinter deciding to add the shot put and discuss to his repertoire. Easier said than done. George |

I second Mental Epic. You can do it right out of the box, without studying "mentalism" as an art form. You can use any theme you like. Mental Epic boards can be purchased fairly cheaply.
For close-up, Richard Osterlind has a near-perfect version using three business cards called Artificial Intelligence. It's in his book Mystique and also in his "Live Without a Net" video set. The method is from an old Peter Warlock effect, so isn't entirely original, but the premise he uses is engaging, seems like real mind-reading, and eliminates the chance of this scenario: Performer: "What are you thinking of?" Participant: "You're the mind-reader, you tell me!" I'd rank this close to Sneak Thief (another possibility for you -- Larry Becker) for all-around impact and ease of performance. Hope this helps, Jerry |

I too think mental Epic would be a good choice and is probably easier to do and present than Sneak Thief. The books are good suggestions as well.

Buying Mental Epic right on the start it will be a bad decision.

I know from your perspective your question is innocent and simple, but let me break down what it means to those of us who have devoted our lives in some degree to mentalism: 1. "So I'm more of a card magician but I want to take my Mentalsim up a notch" Many mentalists perform mentalism full stop. So for those of us who work from that context you have just identified our art as a subset of magic. I get that it seems very much like it would be, but the more you learn about it the more you will learn it is not. Based only on this sentence you would be looking for mental magic at best, but you say "My Mentalism" as though you have a sense of ownership to it, while simultaneously showing us that you don't really know what that word means. 2. "and I don't have a very big budget" Here you are telling us you want to get more than you have the ability to pay for. You want more without giving more. 3 "What I need is something that guesses the predictions of others, like a clipboard gimmick but cheap. Anything under $150 works" You can find lots of that in lots of places, I think I know what you are looking for, but all of your terms are off. If someone writes on a clipboard, it's not a prediction. You might make a prediction, but it wouldn't be with a clipboard. etc... So the best we can offer to help you is to give you book recommendations. Because then you will begin to learn about what Mentalism is. Also, the technical info for what you are looking for will be found in a book. Please know that the process of learning mentalism is going to take time. But treat it with love and respect and you will be given much. I wish you well on your journey.

Forget the haters. Mentalists are always trying to tell you how hard it is and how you have to have respect and study and on and on. If you can perform, hold an audience and are creative, you can be a mentalist. In fact, you could buy 5 tricks, string them together with some patter and be good to go. I would bet you'd be better than half the guys on here telling you how to do it. Mentalism is a subset of magic since all the famous mentalists were at one time magicians. It's a fine progression and only requires that you say you have a power and demonstrate it. The magicians of the old days did the same thing with just magic effects and boxes. Look at Derren Brown. He incorporates all kinds of magic tricks into his show and he's maybe the most famous today.
A deck of cards, an impression pad, a band writer, a blindfold, some spoons and instructions you can get from youtube will give you the same show most touring mentalists have. Will you be great, nobody knows? If you have talent at magic performance that translates to talent at mentalism. It's all about the performer. I suggest you build the whole thing around cards since you know that. Go watch Chan Canasta on youtube. The best mentalism you'll see with cards. He could force and remember a stack. That got him fame. You don't have to pay your dues or any of that crap. You just put an act together, perform and succeed or fail. It's pretty simple. Paying your dues usually means going from bad to good by performing a lot. Everyone does that. |
