Hi,
Although not really a fully thought out routine, I thought of maybe doing a chop cup routine with the balls as small rubberband balls (you know how you rap bands around a marble or whatever). I am sure it is obvious how you could make this into a "special" ball, with the special "gimmick" (which those of you who own a chop cup, know of) inside a ball. I was also thinking of covering the cup with elastic bands as well, so it seems as though is is just one big elastic band cup. And then the final loads could obviously be large elastic band balls! From here you could go into your favourite elastic band trick. What are your opinions? Does anybody already use elastic band balls for their cups and balls routine? owen |

Hi
It's different, but the main question is why? Are you just looking for a different looking props? Paula

No,
This was not the idea for the routine. The presence of rubberband balls is quite a common office thing. People recognize them as (well not quite) an every day object. The idea of having jumbo rubberband balls as a load is an obvious follow up. The cup is just an idea. Also for someone who has an act of just rubberband magic, or a section of rubberband magic in their act, then this would be quite a strange and original use of bands. Owen |

I like it. I've been trying to think of alternatives to the standard balls. The only thing I could think up was little globes. I like your idea better though.
I'd say run with it and if you do have a rubberband routine, you could just remove as many rubberbands as you needed from the final loads. Back to the drawing board for me. |

Erniep33,
Please feel free to try this idea out, and have a practice, etc. I do not currently have the time to make a proper routine around it, but thought that some people may appreciate the idea. |

Thanks, I'll give it a try.

I actually thought you meant a chop cup made of rubber at first but that set me thinking, if you did make one of these out of rubber it would be easier to transport, and I suppose it would be pocket-size or hmmmmm, vanishing cup a la Neilson.

Fred Kaps found a collapsible, rubber photo lens hood that folded flat and he used it for a one cup and ball routine.

If I may, I'd like to get permission to use this concept as well. I do trade shows for a lot of businesses that center around office supplies, printers, copiers and travel. The tie-in (pun intended) is pretty obvious.
Not to mention that I do quite a bit of rubberband magic of a rather obscure nature...! Thanks in advance, Lee Darrow, C.Ht.

Silicone rubber cups and bowls are showing up as props in a lot of cooking shows, and are available in catalogs. While you may not be able to make a chop cup from silicone, you could certainly use a set of them for the cups and balls. Produce silicone jugling balls, or "implants" or...
The cups come in bold primary colors, as well as several muted shades. They are flexible, and good to at least 450 degrees F. There should be something they can do magically.

You probably thought of this already.
How about using the old song Rubber Band Man...... I love using a mix of modern and nostalgic(sic??) music and props. Can you share the source, books, manuscripts for "obscure rubber band magic"..... Thanks in advance. Do you know the Avon Published How to be an Astonishing Executive. P. Harris is one of the authors. In it he describes the 4 rows and columns of 10 items(could be rubber bands. You keep adding an item(rubber band) in a row or column,,,,, and the total in each column still remains 10. What is old is new. I love going back to Tarbel and the Encylopedia of Impromptu magic for ideas. Thanks for sharing, Harris

I've been considering looking for a rubber set of cups & balls, as an inexpensive alternative to leather cups. Have heard wonderful things about "undocumented features" of leather cups. Does anyone have any experience using rubber cups?
And would one pay for these with a rubber check?

Mormonyoyoman,
I do not know whether you would rather have a set of leather cups...but if you do then I advise you check out the dice cups (not for dice stacking, just normal dice cups) that are sold at the Gambler's General Store in Vegas. I bought 3 identical cups whilst there for $4 each!!! Apparantly magicians sell the same thing at there shops for about $80 a set...if not more! I have not really had a chance to try them out yet, however they seem pretty good. owen |
