Hi Bob.

The handkerchief version is generally credited to Yank Hoe, and was originally published in the Downs book, it can also be found in Bobos. This trick was the basis of Als Matrix.

While usually called an "assembly", it's technically not actually an assembly as we use the term. Matrix is an assembly, as is Chink a chink - coins or other objects vanish from their relative positions and assemble in one spot, hence the term.

The Sympathetic Coins is actually a penetration effect - the coins pass magically through the handkerchief (the last coin doesn't penetrate, but is usually blown or passed somehow).

Both the Sympathetic Coins and Als Matrix are excellent tricks.

As for Chink a Chink, it was originally done with sugar lumps - check the Stars of Magic book for the now classic Mohammed Bey handling.

Roth came up with the now popular coin version of Chink a Chink. Ammar then added a gimmick (you probably have one), so that the trick could be done without the need for the clean-up which Roths handling required.

Ammars version is known as Shadow Coins.

All four tricks/handlings I've mentioned here are worthy of your consideration, and are (in my opinion) excellent tricks for any magician.

Thanks, folks! To Michael for the info about Schneider's e-book (which I've started to read), and to Ray and Jim for the historical overview, references, and clarification of terminology. Schneider's matrix is a masterful use of the one-ahead principle (but perhaps you all already knew that Smile .) These tricks are just amazing!

Jim (and others): This may be hard to answer, if I were to choose just one of the four tricks you mentioned to start with, which would you recommend as easiest for a relative beginner to pick up? (I realize that any one of them will take lots of work.)

Roth's trick is basic, and very magical. It is a coin assembly using only your hands to cover the coins. He performed it on Letterman! It is in his book, in Kaufman's Coinmagic, and on many of his basic coin dvds, including the NYCMS dvd series
Shadow coins by Ammar is pretty much the same, but uses a gaff.

Hi Bob, and welcome to this part of The Café. Smile

Lots of good info here... For a "beginner," I agree here with Doc, Roth's work is a good start for anybody and has been exactly that for most (or it should've been). Smile So, if you want to learn this sort of effect where the magic seems to happen from your bare hands, *PLUS a little more as Roth's expert instruction even shows you how to turn it into a bit longer routine by explaining another one of his wonderful effects that works as a great lead-in (and or works as a stand-alone trick as well) to doing his wonderful Chink-a-Chink (aka, Coin Assembly, as nicely explained above here by Jim). It's quite nice, pretty easy as well to get down good, and happens to be one of the best ongoing values in coin magic available on he web, IMHO. Smile For about $6 bucks, you can have this today, in a flash...Just add some diligent practice and it will be yours to command soon, and then forever more. Smile

Good journey to you. Smile

Hi, Mb, and thanks for the welcome! I've read many of your posts and have enjoyed them all. I'll look into the Roth, as you and Michael suggest. I've studied Roth a bit (thought you should know that Smile ); I have his DVD set Expert Coin Magic Made Easy (pretty paradoxical title, no?) One the the disks does have his chink-a-chink, though perhaps it's different from the Blue Crown video you suggested?

I think it's the same. Roth has taught that routine in a lot of places over the years. It is considered a modern classic.

Yeah, I only mentioned the download because it came with his Winged Silver as a lead-in to doing the Chink-a-Chink...Makes for an even greater presentation. Smile What Roth shows in the video is exactly how it plays, he sets the whole thing up for you. Just a wonderful presentation of two of his classic effects, that can also be done as amazing-enough individual effects. Smile

*Oh, and I appreciate your good words as to my posts. Smile

My pleasure, Mb. It turns out that both Winged Silver and Chink-a-Chink are both on the Roth set that I own, so you've done me two favors: alerted me to a pair of effects that go well together, and saved me six bucks! Smile

And thanks for everyone for interrupted their conversation to give me all these great leads. Please feel free to continue your conversation! Or, as Holmes might say, "Pray continue your most interesting narrative."

Sorry, that is not magic, but camera trickery. Worthless, in my opinion. The guy can't talk it seems like as well. No one can follow this and be entertained. Murphy Magic should be ashamed of putting something like this out. Terrible Video, and not one real spectator.

I really can't stand "movie trailer" type videos that won't show a straight unedited performance.
