Hi All,
I was lucky enough to receive one of the review copies of "ESP Error" by Ray Gordon. By combining ideas from Roy Johnson and Max Maven, Ray is offering a straight forward ESP card matching routine with a prediction kicker. The Effect: The performer hands out a prediction to be viewed later. The spectator is given five envelopes, each containing a different ESP symbol, and is permitted to lay down the envelopes in a row in any order the spectator chooses (no force). The spectator is then given an additional five envelopes and asked to place them on top of the tabled envelopes, using intuition to find the matching ESP symbols; the spectator may change her mind about the placements if she wishes. Upon opening each paired set of envelopes, three pairs of matching symbols (a 60% hit rate) are observed... quite a good show of the spectator's intuition. However, two of the pairs are mismatched. The performer then asks that the prediction (in plain view the entire time) be read aloud. The prediction states, "You will perform above average on arranging the symbols. But if I succeeded in influencing your thoughts, you will mix up circle and square." Indeed, the circle and square are the only mismatched symbols (Note. You are not restricted to using ESP cards; you can use business cards, photographs, etc. if you prefer). ESP Error was clearly inspired by Max Maven's "Zenvelopes," but Ray has simplified the handling and incorporated the prediction kicker. Many of you will likely have the necessary cards and envelopes in your drawers, but Ray has supplied printable templates for the cards and the envelopes just in case. While there are, technically, no "moves" in ESP Error, you will need some practice with the handling. Ray provides some suggestions for using cards other than ESP symbols. You can surely use your imagination to create your own presentation to suit your show and character. You can present it as a demonstration of intuition (the original routine), but is easily presented as demonstrations of mind reading, clairvoyance, etc. You have control over which pairs are mismatched and reset will take a minute or two at most. Overall, I really like ESP Error. It is available at Penguin Magic for $15.00. Regards, Steve
