Someone has gotten my password here and is trying to extort Bitcoin from me.
They are threatening me with demonstratably false info. If you read posts or PMs from " me" that don't seem right, don't believe it. I would never ask for money from a member here in a PM. - Mary Mowder |

I got a message last week from someone trying to extort Bitcoin. The message said I had been hacked and the guy had access to everything I had done on the computer and threatened to send web page screen shots to all my contacts if I didn't send him $500 within 36 hours. He even sent the message to me from my own email address to prove I had been hacked. I didn't send the $500 of course and nothing happened. You gotta be on the lookout all the time.

😢 😪 😥 😧 😧 😕
This doesn't mean: the 'love letter', I received, last week,... from you,... is bogus(!), ...does it?..! ☹️ ,...probably does. Well, ...i have the weekend, to extort myself.... Thanks. Gallagher p.s.: If you want, you can use my password. 🤗 |

I have received several of these messages. They say they know my passwords and have seized control of my camera and tracked my keyboard, while stating that they 'know' I have visited several sites. They claim to know when I am reading the message and give me 24 hours to send them Bitcoin.
However, I immediately knew this was a bogus claim, as I have taped over my camera for years now and it is impossible for them to see anything through it! I just ignore them and send them to the trash bin. This is a well known scam; just ignore these, Mary. |

One answer is, of course, to never post anything on the Internet that you do not want the world to know. (Mary might well fit that standard)
most scams are built on guilt or secrets. But, there does seem to be trend towards building on people's faulty memory as well. Ever get a "Following up on our conversation last year, "when that never happened, or "you can unsubscribe" when you never subscribed in the first place? There are also now "surveys" containing a false premise and a concealed sales message - or indoctrination. Naturally, any info you provide is sold. My favorite is "Your friend Etienne used out service" when he lives in France and hardly needs a Tennessee pest control company. Most media ads contain a lie of some sort based on "everybody is the same idiot" approach. For me this is a scam also. I guess it just proves that it is easier to steal than work for a living.

Confidence men normally win trust which is why they are called confidence men.
This con, it seems to me, is about trust as the con man is trying to use Mary's good name.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Not only Mary but by coincidence I just got a text message on my phone stating that I owe a payment to Cash America Today.com. That is a legit website, although I've never had any previous contact with them. So should I disregard it as a scam too? Has anybody else had that similar experience?

Maybe this happened because Mary is such a very vocal, extremely opinionated, high-profile, controversial rebel performer within the magic community!

I know because I sent him money for the shovels and backhoes he used, as well as for the consulting fees of the soil experts. But, no, not even that could help. Thank you all.
I had a feeling I was not the only one. One of the things that really bothered me was the assertion that the scammer was just trying to be paid for the time and research they had done. -Mary |

Somebody else answered my question about the supposed text from cashamericatoday.com. Apparently the call was legit. In other words it was an honest mistake of a wrong number, the number that was used by the phone's previous-user. That makes sense as I just bought this new phone recently.

I’ve heard about the IRS phone scammers, and I got a recorded call from them not long ago saying they had a warrant for my arrest if I didn’t pay up, they gave me the number to call to make the payment.
Knowing it wasn't real, I called just to see what they would say; a womnn answered the phone and started screaming at kids to be quite so I laughed and hung up. Haven’t heard back. Tom

A lot of peoples passwords have been hacked over the last couple of years and it looks like the scammers have used this list of hacked passwords to try and frighten people into paying them extortion money. I've gotten three such emails, each demanding anywhere between $3000 and $7000 to be paid in bitcoin. I don't remember exactly where I saw it but I also was able to download a list that showed what passwords of mine had been known to be hacked.
I now use password software that generates my passwords and stores them all in a single heavily encrypted file. I only have to remember 1 password now to get into the software and since it's only 1 password, I can make it relatively complex. (I can remember 1 complex password, not 100!) |
