Hi guys, I recently did a small act. I love the way Shin does his hand gestures, like there is a perfect choreography. And it is my first time I am doing something like this. Hoping to hear comments from you all.
https://youtu.be/LBWC7GAhGoE I am trying to learn more about hand choreography, so fellow magicians please help me in this endeavour. |

I believe one reason why his hands are as graceful as they are is he studied and played concert piano for years.

Will practicing finger tutting help in choreographing hand moves?

I would think that any type of hand exercises should help in giving the hands graceful movements.

A beautiful performance! Maybe you could practice to do it with less hesitating and to do it more like Shin Lim you might also work more with black and white colors and light / shadows.

It is Shin Lim personality, that he creates in his mind that causes his gestures. It can't be copied, as you have a different personality. It is like trying to perform Slydini's movements as he does, only he makes it looks natural, because it is to him and him alone. Everyone else just gets laughed at, because it is not there personality.

Am trying to learn that now, with my personality being added to it. I really don't want to become another copycat, but the problem is I am heavily influenced by him. So Bill as a senior magician what are your thoughts on this. |

I have always heard "Just be you" or "make the effect your own" I really didn't know what those terms REALLY meant. How do I do that? I've been influenced by many magicians I admire and enjoyed
watching. Michael Ammar, Bill Malone, J.C. Wagner, Jay Sankey, Lance Burton to name a few. ( all with different personalites) It was a process for me. I tried being serious, mysterious, humorous etc. Over time I felt comfortable, sort of like weaing a comfortble pair of shoes, that light humor was where my zone rested. How did I know that? My audience, by their interactions and respones with me. The humor wasn't forced but came natural as it was already in me, just developed the more I performed. That does't mean that everyone I encounter likes me. But I'm me take it or leave it. Sure I'm sensative to people, especially in my restaurant work where I'm approaching them, but I have discovered that more often than not the people have a great time. I've even been able to win over some people who were indifferent initially. So find out who you are. Benefit from the people you admire and emulate and find your YOU-ZONE. Have fun in the process.

But when I perform magic, people have told me that , they enjoy my act more when it is performed in sync to music, rather than interacting. So what shall I do? |

Asif, I can only speak for me in that I perform mainly strolling/ walk around.
Your venue sounds more formal, performing with music. If that is where you feel comfortable and your audience enjoys you then just incorporate your natural personality , cool jovial, into your perfomances. Are you looking to market yourself and your magic or is it to entertain family and friends? What is your goal and where do you want to take it? Watching Shin Lim, he has a more serious, mysterious demeanor in his performance. As you mention, that style is not you. Be YOU and maybe use funny facial expressions that what you are doing even surprises you. Be comfortable in your own skin. Facial expressions and body movements can and should reflect YOUR personality imo. Other performers create a character. John Carney comes to mind. Another magician does an act performing as Charlie Chaplin. They are exagerated extension of their natural personalities. Just think about how your unique personality can be incorporated into your magic. Once you find it you won't be a copycat. You will be you.

Also another thing I have noticed while comparing eastern and western magic is that, the eastern magicians prefer to be more mysterious while the western magicians focus more on entertaining and interacting with the audience. Why is that so? |

On Feb 15, 2019, asif The Eastern people have not lost the wonder of the belief that magic can happen, they are not afraid to say what if. The Western people have allowed the beliefs to become antics of the court jesters and lost their sense of wonderment. But that is only my opinion. |
