Here is another trick that magicians hardly do for kids, multiplying billiard balls. I've been doing it at Daycares and birthday parties for many years now and during all those performances, I've picked up a few bits of funny pieces that is now part of the routine.
When I saw Dick Oslund--which is one of the best I'd ever seen, I bought a Ball o matic set which is now part of the routine. Tricky Ricky |

I believe oscar Munoz does a magic to music billard ball routine also for kids.
I used to do a 3.5 minute card manip opening for some kid shows that went well. Don't use it now... don't want the clean up and my hands aren't as smooth nano wise as they used to be |

I've developed arthritis in both hands and I'm not able to hold a ball between the middle and ring finger. I didn't want to take the billiard out of the act so I had to be creative. I had to make some changes on how to handle the balls.
Would like others to chime in who may have the arthritis over the years and how they were able to overcome the problem with doing the billiard trick. Tricky Ricky |

Scott Green has a great 2-ball billiard ball routine for kids, combining classic manipulation with children's comedy hijinks like look-don't-see and magician-in-trouble. Check out his DVD and book.

Keith Fields also has a great 1-to-4 billiard ball multiplication routine in his first book on kid show performance.

Hi Scott, thanks for chiming and the information. The routine I do for kids is one from Supreme magic called (Yell up for kids.) I've now added the 4 flash ball production at the end.
As in my earlier post, I mentioned Dick Oslund routine on his DVD. It's priceless. Tricky Ricky |

Thanks Ricky for the great comment on my ball routine, which I've used now for about 40+ years.
It's written up in my book, "DICK OSLUND -- ROAD SCHOLAR" You can see it PERFORMED on my dvd. It runs just under 5 minutes, it needs no body loads, or "get ready", and, with a little care, can be done in a circus ring. It is especially strong for elementary age kids, but high school "kids" appreciate it, too. Props can be carried in a coat pocket, except for the "Ball o Matic" (4 ball flash production). I've used it for walk a round dates.

Is performance rights not included with the purchase of Dicks book or DVD? Although asking permission is never a bad thing....

Randy, you might have a point there. Dick I suppose is still doing that routine since he'd wrote the book and he may've added subtle entertainment value to the routine, and I'll bet he does.
In all of his routines pay attention hoe plays to the audience--the way he gets applause at the right time, all the little things he does to get reaction from the audience and most of all --the laughter. Tricky Ricky |

@Shawn, Ricky, randy, + everybody else!
I published the book in the spring of 2015. I bought a computer and began "actually writing it, about 2010, BUT, it actually began being written, about 1965, when I quit being a part time pro. and began being a full timer. I had decided to specialize in school assembly work. (That's how I "began" in 1945!) I had had 20 years to develop a good program. I had booked a whole bunch of elementary schools in that 20 years! (plus club dates for adults, etc.) Lyceum bureaus that booked school tours up to 35 weeks, made it necessary to produce a 45 (+/-) minute program that could play successfully to ALL LEVELS of schools (K--12) PLUS an occasional college, senior citizen homes, mental hospitals, reform schools. physically challenged schools, prisons, ETC! I did, and, was never at liberty for nearly 50 years. After lunch one day in New Orleans, in 2018, my pal Jon Racherbaumer said, "You should write a book!" I asked, "About what?" He said,"About Lyceum work. No one has told the real story of how Lyceum 'works'!" It took 5 years of writing, in my spare time, to write up a bit of history, add some anecdotes, about school magicians who had mentored me, as a youth, talk about their programs, add some stories about other magicians I met along the way. Then, I wrote up the CRITERIA that helped develop my program, AND, also wrote up many of the tricks that I used. I never realized, as a teen of 15, that I would someday write a book that would be shipped to FOUR CONTINENTS!. I'll hit the submit button, before this infernal electrisch peckenclacker eats it, and, continue below!

I've never 'invented' a trick, but, I have, with experience, learned things that helped improve the presentation of a trick or routine. I've included those "tips", 'cuz, those tips make the difference in how a trick/routine "plays".
With some old 'standard' routines, I completely changed the basic presentation. Example: The 20th Century Silks! It's well over a century, since T. Francis Fritz produced the original routine. --And, gezillions of magicians still do the trick EXACTLY (even the red velvet bag on a stick!) AS THE ORIGINAL INSTRUCTIONS!I completely changed the PREMISE. It "begins" like a repeat of the "Slydini Knots". The finish is a complete SURPRISE. (SURPRISES ARE ESSENTIAL!) When I have a K-12 audience, the HIGH SCHOOL KIDS, ENJOY THE LITTLE KIDS FUN! The ball ROUTINE developed when I dropped the "xxx"ing balls. (The contact juggling is old stuff. The Perpetual Balls (which I do as a 'perverse' bit, NOT AS A DEMONSTRATION OF MANIPULATIVE SKILL!!!!) were from Percy Abbott in 1950. The visible ball thru silk came from the very late Bill Williston. Karrell Fox contributed the "BALL-O-MATIC, (used differently from the basic idea). You can see it done on my dvd. The Breakaway Fan, comedy Wands routine is MINE. I've gotten standing ovations on the FAN! The notes on the C&R Rope are from a session with Jack Chanin in 1953, plus several other guys in Hugard's Monthly. Comedy Balloon Pump--the 'finish' is mine. The Disecto routine is basically mine with a few old classic gags. It is especially for the high school kids. The ILLUSION ROUTINE is MINE. The late Roy Mayer, and J.B. Bobo contributed the original idea. The "AWWWW" GAG is mine. (Rabbit production) MUTILATED PARASOL, IS FROM MY PAL, THE LATE DON LAWTON. I kept his premise, but changed the lines to fit elementary schools. The TACTILE ILLUSION is my adaptation from "Illustrated Magic". THE COIN PAIL IS DEFINITELY MINE. IT CLOSES THE ELEMENTARY PROGRAM AND IS NEAR THE CLOSING OF THE HIGH SCHOOL SHOW. I wrote all of this stuff so that others may realize that there are different PRESENTATIONS FOR CLASSIC ROUTINES. FEEL FREE TO USE ANY OF THEM!

OOOOOOOPS! Sorry Ricky, in replying to Shawn D's & Randy S's posts, I intended to OK anyone's using my ball routine. heqq. I'm, 87, and retired, so I don't depend on the balls for a living, and, I wrote the routines in the book to share them.
In my enthusiasm, I "kinda" swiped your OP!

During one of my multiplying ball routine one of the ball fell from my finger and started bouncing. I pretend to catch the ball, instead I would miss it at same time I would bounce it to up the up and down movement to the kids delight. I give a OOOOPS every time I grab. The kids would chime in OOOPS, THEN oopsy Daisy.

I'm in complete agreement with TrickyRicky: Dick Oslund's Ball Routine is great, with lots of humor and variety. I'm working on learning it right now. And there are many other exceptional routines in The Road Scholar that have been polished in thousands of performances. I can't recommend this book highly enough for anyone who does stand-up magic for children or adults.
