I'm building a box trick for a show that I'm going to do, I want to put an object in and then be able to show the whole thing empty in the end...any ideas? I'm looking for something to do with black art!

How big an object and what is it? How big a box? What sort of venue? What routine?
How about mirrors? |

No, not mirrors; my show is kind of based on black magic and other things. However, in ways, just small shows. The box is about 9-10 inches wide and 5-7 inches tall, and the object is basically anything that will fit and work with the gimmick.

How about a Breakaway Vanish (or whatever it's called; Abbot's makes it for vanishing livestock -- the box is make of frames covered in newspaper)?
Or a square circle in reverse? |

How about Mak-Magic Flip Over Box, it is anglely, so not real good for close quarter shows.
Why not use a Vanishing Devil's Hank. If you are just vanishing small items. Your post is not very clear, can you explain with more detail? |

The front is going to have a sliding door which is half the size of the front window. The object is placed into the box, the door is slid to the other side. Then it is slid back and the other half has vanished. But I want to be able to flip up the front then, to show the whole box empty.
I'm guessing there is no way for me to do this? |

You just lost me there! Can you explain it a bit better? You want a box 9-10 inches wide and 5-7 inches tall. How deep do you need? Sliding door on front, with window? Does the window or top open to insert the the object? XBob |

There is a door on top, and about 5-7 inches deep. There is a rectangular hole in the front with a sliding door which is half as wide (you can only see half the object, then you slide it to show the other half). Then it dissapears!

Then what disappears? What is anything?
Why a half sliding door? So the box is L-7"X W-7"X H-10", with an opening about 6"X 9". Is this correct? A sliding door 3"X 9 1/2" in sliding channel on front. Is this correct? It also has a hinged door on top 7" X 7". Is this correct? You just state gimmick, this is confusing. What gimmick? A black art wall? How would you show the box empty? We really need something to work with here. It would help if you told us what you are trying to accomplish, I mean the big picture. Not just to vanish my stuff. |

So basically you've built a box, and now you want to think of a gimmick to build INTO it?

Nevermind you guys are hopeless. I built it and I'll just leave it as it is!

If you leave it 'AS IS' will it still work?
Use a black cover behind the window for phase one. Use a trap door into a table under it for final vanish. Or you could use the "drawer box" principle on its side.

Clubber,
There are a lot of folks on this board, including myself, that have tried to steer you in the right directions on several questions you have asked over the past few weeks. These people have many years of experience in building and performing. They have tried to save you time, effort, and disappointment by giving you sage advice, based on their own experiences. You have responded to many of these individuals with impatience and cynicism, for which you should be ashamed. Even in this thread, have asked a cryptic question and, when asked for additional information, called the individuals "hopeless" who have tried to help you. It's fairly obvious that you have your own ideas on how things should be done, and to h*** with everyone else. Since you are apparently not interested in what anyone else has to say, I offer a suggestion that you might be much happier if you refrain from posting on this board, and retreat into your own study with your two Osborne books. Who knows, you might even pioneer a heretofore unexplored and completely original branch of magic and illusion. If I have misinterpreted your intentions, I offer my apology. Otherwise, I wish you the best. Amos McCormick

I was kidding about saying that you are all hopeless. I was just getting kind of frustrated because I really suck at explaining things in ways that are understandable. Sorrry.

I guess I am just tired of folks that have been professional magicians for more years than I have been alive being told off by a 14-year-old (not you). So often we don't realize what a wonderful resource we have here, free for the asking.
Anyhow, to get the latest work on all things black art, look here: http://www.blackartsecrets.com Dondrake is a really nice guy, and has written the only complete guide to black art currently available. You might also consider something like a Square Circle in reverse, where you vanish items rather than produce them. Amos McCormick

Thanks, but I have already kind of figured out how to do it. Pete Biro's idea was really helpful, now all I have to do is build a prototype and test it out! And about the dondrake books, I have really considered his black art book, and inexpensive illusions. I have been trying to find out more info on them for about 3 months, lol. Anyway, I think that my Paul Osborne books are going to be just fine for now, I just completed the base for the vampire illusion
Oh yea, but if you could please just try to keep some ideas coming (in case this doesn't work out for me), that would be great! Thanks David |

I didn't notice this topic before. What you are making is basically a prop by Mak Magic called the Double Pagoda Box which has been discontinued for a while. However, Fairchild Entertainment now distributes a similar item which you can see on Abbott's Magic site:
https://elektra.safe-order.net/abbottmagic//p880.html Dazzling Magic also carries it: http://www.dazzlingmagic.com/stage_magic_6.htm It uses black art and you can basically figure out how it works from the description. Good luck! Jimmy

For whatever it's worth, my opinion is that if something "vanishes", then the container should be taken apart or very OPENLY and CLEARLY shown empty--black art boxy thingys are appropriate for an "appearance," however...

Yea. Thanks julie, that's what I was thinking. I think I am going to have a table with a trap door mechanism in it! Then I will make the object drop into it (then the entire box) sort of. It is examinable!
