Just wondering if anybody knows what this effect is based on? Ad copy says it's from an idea by U.F. Grant. I don't want to know the secret, but would like to see a performance of this effect.
Lou IMPROVED DEVIL'S NEWSPAPER With this novel production, you can pick up a flat newspaper lying flat on a table and produce a large load of solid items, even a dove, without body loads! Many club performers would like to do a large production, but are reluctant to carry the large apparatus usually necessary for such a production. The Devil’s Newspaper is the answer to this problem. Although this item packs flat in your case, it none the less, holds a large load. This is real appealing magic as a double-sheet of newspaper is seen flat on your table. It is picked up and shown in a slow and deliberate manner. Yet, when folded in half you reach inside the folded newspaper and remove a large load of silks and solid objects such as balls and cans of cola; and I mean a good size load. For Easter shows you can actually pour out a bowl of Easter eggs from the previously flat newspaper! At the finish, you fold the newspaper up flat and replace it on the table. There are positively no body, chair or table loads or hidden pockets in the paper. It is entirely self-contained and all in the newspaper. There is not one false move used. The cleanest cut item you could wish for. The Devil’s Newspaper can also be used for a vanish, as well as a production. It can be used in conjunction with any trick to make transportations. This is Devin Knight's improved version of an old U. F. Grant idea. You get full directions on how to make this up a few dollars and have a banner effect that most audiences haven't seen today. Comes with photographic directions and complete handling. Easy to do and requires no skill.

This effect is explained in the Rice Encyclopedia of Silk Magic. You can get all 4 volumes on CD in PDF format today.
I would not believe the flatness of the news paper. You have to understand magic methods, but it is true somewhat. It does have angles and is meant to be presented in a stand up show, where the performer can control angles and distance. There is a lot of presentation possibles with this prop. Don't know what Devin Knight could have done with this, except to add reinforcements to the assembly, after all it just newspaper. The productions are produced with the newspaper folded in half, as you usually see newspapers at the news stands. Reach in the folded newspaper and pull out the items. It is self contained. I doubt there are any video of this effect, as it was brought out when there was no such thing as video, only film. I have to say, not many magicians probably did not perform this effect because it requires a table with a table cloth. Most magicians have a problem with working from a table, and do not want to work out the angle situations. I like this effect personally. |

Thanks Bill,
Appreciate the quick response. I have Volumes 1 and 3 of Rices. Is it by chance in one of these? Lou

I am sure it is, as 4 was many years after the original publication. Look in silk production apparatus.

I was about to purchase it on Lybrary.com , based on the description posted there , which claims: "There are positively no body, chair or table loads or hidden pockets in the paper. It is entirely self-contained and all in the newspaper. There is not one false move used. Grant. Although it does not necessarily use a "table load" in the sense that the load is concealed inside a table, as Bill points out a draped table is required to conceal the load at the start, so I think the description on Lybrary.com saying "positively no .... table loads" is not entirely accurate. I also can not imagine what has been done to make an "improved" version of this simple, yet effective, silk production from a newspaper. Not sure if I would spend $6.00 to satisfy my curiosity on what the improvement might be ... |

You might want to compare this with my 2017 "Silks from Newspaper" for some new approaches to the old trick.

I did a variation of this for a couple years as an opener. It required no covered table, in fact it is better with an uncovered table. You carry on a tray with a milk pitcher with newspaper folded flat on top of it. You casually show it around then set the tray down to roll up sleeves. Then you pick up newspaper showing it empty then refold. Finally you pour the milk in. Wola! It transforms into whatever you like.
