I think my main problem with some of cold reading is that it isn't rooted in peer-reviewed research. Just because it gets a positive reaction doesn't mean a) it was accurate, or b) it was reliable! Are there cold reading books that are known to be a little more rooted in actual science?

Ray Hyman's scientific credentials are impeccable, and he is one of the world's foremost authorities on cold reading. Read his writings if you want a critical inspection of the subject.
But if you want answers rooted in science, you'll also need to pose more specific questions than "Is cold reading reliable?"
