Yes, this phrase was actually uttered during a conversation I was having with a guy at work today.
One of the lighting designers where I work has previously worked for Chuck Fayne on 'The World's Greatest Magic Show', and mentioned that he really enjoyed going out for drinks with all the magicians after the gigs. I enquired why, but was quite confident I already knew the answer. His response? "Well, 'cos they can go up to the bartender and say, 'Will you give me these drinks for free if I can...?'" Good to see we're useful for something, eh? Cheers (literally!!) -- Topher |

Magician's can be great people to go drinking with just as Carpenter's, Doctor's, the unemployed and anyone else that you enjoy keeping company with.
Good companions come in many flavors and even a Magician can be bad company if they insist in showing off or are demanding. I for one would never even think of asking for anything free but then again, it is not in keeping with my personality. If or when I do Magic, it is only to amuse and entertain and if I should get anything for it, I am gratful but I really expect nothing in return but maybe a smile. Iven

Hmmmm I know just the place to try that out. Everyone at my job goes to the same place every friday so we always get the same waitress. I should definitely try that once I get a little bit better. =)

Proving what everyone always suspected: Magicians are a bunch of cheap #$%@!*&%! There's an old saying about magicians: If you go to a magic conventions and hang out with the losers, you'll become a loser. If you hang out with the bright ones, you'll become a bright one. If you hang out with the "big names", you'll get stuck with the bar bill. |

Hehehe That's also true of college students like me. Especially those of us employed in Tech support, I still get paid less than the baker does in the school's food service.

If you go drinking with the good ones, its great. You don't want to go drinking with the baddies, you might end up in a brawl. Some get pretty arrogant and fresh with the girls, and some people are just not appreciative of magic. Just choose who you go drinking with, and it should be magical.

Well going to the bar puts you in a great place to do lots of impromptu or bar tricks.

Magicians are the worst to go drinking with, when the drinks come they make them disappear in an instant then they vanish when the bill comes.
Sorry... couldn't help myself.

It can work agaisnt you also.
I quit going drinking with a bunch of my friends after work on Fridays becasue it seemed like I was the dancing monkey. I did a few card tricks and some other stuff once and then it was on every Friday. They would even go to the store and buy a pack of cards before they went to the bar just so I would do trick for them. So I quit going. it was fun to do a few now and then but I didn't want to be the entertainment I wanted to just hang out like everyone esle.Of course I did drink for free because they kept the beer coming but it wasnt really worth it when you don't feel like doing trick all night. I agree with Shawn D. It can become annoying if you get bugged to do magic all the time but it is great fun being able to perform.
Getting people to back of in a nice way takes some practise but I learned it very quickly. |

I haven't had a problem with that so far *knocks on wood* Of course that could be to my very limited magical knowledge.

I for one use my skills to entertain. My freinds enjoy going drinking with me for my company rather than what I can get for them. Still every once in a while I do enjoy performing a trick or two for the waitress (or water whench as we call em). This has from time to time gotten me free drinks, but I have never asked for free drinks. Nor would I.

It's great to go drinking with fellow magicians. After a couple of pints your creative juices really get going! ;-)

Hi Will,
Surprised to see this post dug up again. Was over a year ago when I posted it. It was interesting to see the dozen or so responses that this thread received. The post was just a mention of something that happened at work (the guy that said this didn't know that I was a magician myself), and yet some of the guys on this forum took it as an opportunity to teach us all a "life lesson" about social skills. I'm surprised some of them actually get invited out for drinks. Hehehe!!! Anyway, cheers mate! Take it easy. -- Topher |
