I'm going to just assume I am slow and behind the times. My wife was having me watch Music Man starring Robert Preston and Shirley Jones. She said it would be good for developing my Traveling Medicine Show character to watch it. Well I did and notice in the scene where they are in the gymnasium and he's trying to sell them on the idea of the boys band, he performed the appearing cane and then continued to use it like a conductors baton and pretended it was a number of different instruments.

Is Robert Preston an amateur magician or did someone just put that in who was consulting for the movie. He actually did a decent job of performing the effect. Of course, no telling how many takes there were to get it right. You can tell when he goes for it and you can tell he is holding. But a lay audience would have no idea.

I believe that it was stop photography, not an appearing cane that was used. I could be wrong but didn't he also have a wardrobe change at that time? I'll have to watch it again now that you have piqued my interest.

No, it was an appearing cane. No wardrobe change. It was towards the beginning part of the movie. The wardrobe change and stop action photography that you are thinking about came at the end of the movie when they presented the boys band. I'm talking about the 4th of July festivities held in the gymnasium due to the chances of rain (on a sunny day). I watched closely and when he held the cane out so that the top was facing the camera you saw black. Its about 42 minutes into the movie on my tape, but mine was taped off of tv so there were commercials.

I don't have a copy of The Music Man but it is on my list of DVD's to buy. I will get a copy this weekend and check out that particular scene.
As far as Robert Preston being a Magician, I don't know. As you probably know, many Actor's are interested in Magic and many do practice the art as a hobby, so he may well be a Magician.
Howard, you are cold. Smile

Changing the subject slightly..theMusic Man is an excellent Film with some excellent songs.
I suggest you take a listen to the CD of the Musical "Mack and Mabel" with Robert Preston and Bernadette Peters,it was a bit of a flop on Broadway but has some excellent tunes in it. You can hear a few audio clips on http://www.amazon.co.uk

irossall,
I wasn't intending to be sarcastic, apologies if it seemed so, I was merely stating the fact he is no longer alive. It seemed some of you are under the impression he is still with us.

Wasn't aware he had died. When I did a google search on that matter it didn't turn up anything relevant.

Howard, I was intending to be sarcastic. To me, sarcasim is not always to be taken seriously. I was just having fun with you and nothing else. When I dish out a bit of sarcasim, I fully expect (and usually enjoy) to have some sarcasim come back to me. If someone really ticks me off, I will PM them to let them know. Smile
