http://ambigram.matic.com/ambigram.htm has a generator which will start you off.

Also check out the work of John Langdon. He did the designs for Angels and Demons as well as some other GREAT ambigrams.

If anyone can do my name "Robert Haas" into an ambigram, I'd be forever grateful. I'd like to use it as a logo myself. for my act. Maybe do Robert / Wizard or something like that. That would be cool

An ambigram is also a word that is spelled the same forward and backward. For instance, "mom" or "dad". One can get more creative and say "A Toyota" also. Spelled the same forward and backward. However, the one that I'm most familiar with is the following:

"A Man, A Plan, A Canal, Panama"

It's pretty cool. Just a bunch of useless knowledge I guess.

An ambigram is NOT the same as palindrome. An mirror image ambigram needs to look the same when held up to a mirror. So MOM is but DAD is not (the D's do not look the same reversed). ATOYOTA is an ambigram but a toyota is not!

Ambigrams are more about the style of the writing as an image then the letters themselves.

I'm enjoying the topic of Ambigrams / Inversions. You can find lots of examples of these on the internet. I collected them for the past 15 years or so, and have several hundred. I've even tried a few, but without the sheer genius of a Scott Kim of John Langdon, I usually fall short. Years back, in the Magic SYMbol periodical (for the Society of Young Magicians ... sponsored by the S.A.M.) I published several magic tricks using Inversions. I'll describe them in more detail in anyone is interested. If you want to see my name as an Inversion (I use it on most of my promotional materials) it is on the first page of my web site http://members.aol.com/dangarrett/
This particular Inversion was designed by Scott Kim, and I 'prettied it up' in Adobe Illustrator. I hope to see Scott Kim again in person next month, as he comes to Atlanta every 2 or 3 years for a special (private!) event here. (The "Gathering for Gardner" to honor Martin Gardner. Sorry, it is by invitation only.)
The two best books I know on the subject can probably be found by a semi-competent internet surfer, through either Amazon or book searches. They may even still be in print; I don't know.
"Inversions" by Scott Kim
"Wordplay" by John Langdon

A palindrome is something quite different, as already noted. I like them, too. (:}D)

One need only use Google to find all kinds of information on ambigrams! A good place to start is
http://www.ambigram.net
and there is even an ambigram generator to do the 'work' for you. (Of course, this is limited to a one-to-one letter mapping, but it's fun to try and can give you some ideas as a starting point for your ambigram needs.) That site is
http://ambigram.matic.com/ambigram.htm

Here's an ambigram I created. Pretty happy with it. It's the word "funny".

Also, I second the suggestion for the ambigram.matic.com/ambigram.htm site. It's a good start.

Ambigrams are SO much fun! I think I've looked at every ambigram site on the net in the last year or so. Here are a few of my favorite sites:

http://ambidextrous.quintopia.net/
http://punya.educ.msu.edu/PunyaWeb/ambigrams/
http://www.wowtattoos.com/index-1.html
http://www2.iap.fr/users/esposito/ambigallery.html

To make REALLY great ambigrams I think you have to be wired "sleightly" different than the rest of the pack. I've tried and brilliant solutions seem to elude me every time.

I like ambigrams so much I've been securing permission to reprint my favorites in a regular column I write for the Christian Conjurer magazine.

Cheerio,
Kerry

Dan Garrett inspired me to create my first Ambigram years ago when we met at the Atlanta Groundhogs Day Juggling Festival (Hi Dan! You know me as Mike from the Jongleur Jugglers).

Here is the Ambigram I have used on my business card ever since

(Yikes, just noticed I'm replying to a 4 year old thread. Oh well)

I hope every one understands that a palindrome is not the same as an ambigram.

A palindrome is simply a word or phrase that is spelled the same forward and backward. It is not dependent on the font.
Examples:
Noon
Mom
If I Had A Hi Fi
sex at noon taxes

An ambigram is completely dependent on the font (the artistic way the letters are drawn).

My pet peeve is that people who post ambigrams almost always label them. If the ambigram is any good it doesn't need a label.

Has anyone else had the frustrating experience of trying to turn ambigrams upside down on an iPad?
It constantly rotates back to the original orientation!
Argh!
"Is there any point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time."
"The dog did nothing in the night-time."
"That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes.
