I've been using the standard Bicycle 12-deck brick you buy at Costco, BJs, and others to practice handling cards. I'm thinking about getting either the Turner Gold or the Elites to use as well.
Which of those two would you recommend and why? |

The Elites are made with a thinner card stock compared to Standards and Turner Golds. The Turner Golds feel a bit thicker compared to Standards. Closer to a Bee deck. The Elites and Turner Golds both generally faro easily out of the box. At around ~$4 per deck, it's worth getting one of each to try out. They both handle well in practice.
Hope that helps! |

I've tried both and what geoffa states about the thickness is my impression as well. I never thought I'd like thinner cards, but ever since I tried the Bicycle Elites from Penguin, they've become my preference. They seem to handle and spring better and I hit a strike double on those every time. I think the difference comes down to thickness preference.

Well, I went ahead and order a brick of the Elite's which are on pre-order so they won't be arriving any day soon. I did order a few of the Turner Gold label which arrived today. Compared to the garden-variety Bicycle deck, the Turner Gold is clearly more hefty and rigid. I only played with them for a minute or two but found it more difficult to do a DL with it than the regular deck.
I'll give it a lot more time, and get a better feel for the Turner Gold, but my initial reaction is that for handling purposes I like the cards to be a little more flexible. If that opinion remains after using them more, then we'll see how the Elites feel. I'm guessing more flexible then both the regular Bikes and the Turner Golds. My instincts are telling me the Elites will be my favorite. I'll report again back when I've given the Truners a longer test drive. |

I like the Elite’s they are thinner, feel nice, and Farrow easily.

I have been using the Elites for almost a year and they are my preference. Wish Penguin had the blue backs in stock.

If I can give a third option, I would recommend phoenix backs.

EllisJames - why would you recommend the Phoenix backs over the Turner Gold or Elites?

(At least I haven’t had anyone comment or notice) I like the aces. I also like that it’s easy to get any gimmicked cards in the same pattern. (I don’t use gimmicked cards/decks at the moment, but it’s nice to have the option) They faro really well too. |

I really like the thinner stock of the Elites, but I find that they are slightly less durable, which is an important point if you burn through a lot of decks. I practice with normal bikes and then usually use Elites in performance.
