It's interesting.
There are some kids who have toyed with magic based on YouTube videos. I've tried encouraging them and talked to them about S.A.M. Another thing kids aren't these days: joiners. I'm years away, but I was thinking about trying to start some sort of magic camp for kids in the summer. Academically, I try to keep things shorter and more active. I have to hold things together with the force of my personality. That doesn't work as well as it used to either. |

I think it boils down to:
Get out and perform and quell the procrastination and self-analysis! Only when you've done the cross cut (or other things that look obvious to you), to a few people, do you then enjoy and fully accept the power they have. It's that simple.! Yes I know you can dine out on the where's and the why's and talk psychology for hours on it (and I do find that interesting) but I still think the essence of your problem is that simple. Good luck, now go do it.

Dear Ravenspur,
It's rather obvious that you are an enthusiastic beginner. The Café is "full" of enthusiastic beginners. I was a beginner, when I was 8. (I was one of the "exceptional" kids. There was no internet, TV, video tape, etc., in 1938. Libraries had a FEW books for kids. I use capitals to emphasize! I have no idea of how to italicize. (I'm not yelling.) BUT enthusiasm isn't enough. Kids "toy" with many things as they grow up. Talking about the SAM is of little interest to 10 year olds. The SAM and IBM are both losing membership the last I've heard. I KNEW TWO of the IBM FOUNDERS! LEN VINTUS AND GENE GORDON! I NOMINATED WERNER DORNFIELD FOR DEAN OF THE SAM, BEFORE I joined the SAM! I don't belong to either, anymore! (I was a 67 year member of the IBM, and a 40+ year member of the SAM.) I became a part time pro when I was 13, on October 24, 1945. I became a full timer when I was about 35. I toured the USA, COAST TO COAST AND BORDER TO BORDER, for almost 50 years. I was never "at liberty"; I NEVER tried to drag little kids into magic. When I was experienced enough to MENTOR a young lad, AND HE APPROACHED ME, I would help. The late Chuck Windley, Bob McAllister, Doug Henning, and Dennis Loomis, were just a few. There are a dozen more (now full timers) making a living as professionals. Currently, I'm mentoring several others. Two are 18, another is 67. (He is a professor of psychology in a University.) Magic is 5% sleight of hand skills, 5% sensory illusions, 5% esoteric principles of science, and EIGHTY FIVE PERCENT PSYCHOLOGY! Sophocles said it a few thousand years ago: "ONE LEARNS BY DOING THE THING!" LEARNING is an ACTIVE "PROCESS". A mentor only GUIDES. Nemo dat quod non habet! (No one gives what he does not have!) At Jon Racherbaumer's insistence, I wrote a 400 page book about my life in magic. (I'm 87, and retired.) It might help you to understand! There are a few members of the Café, who don't like what I write. I tell them: Then, don't read my posts! I hope this has been helpful.
