One of the most annoying aspects of buying magic tricks, books or videos are non-explanations: When the magician or author claims to explain the secret, but in fact he does not.
In most cases, this is not mean-spirited. It is just that a great magician is not necessarily a good teacher or writer. They probably think that they explain the method, when in fact they don't. An example: "I riffle trough the pages with my head turned and instruct them to say stop whenever they like and as soon as they say stop, I ask: 'Right there?' It is at this moment that I take a peek at the page number on top of the page." No, I don't expose a method here, because the author of this trick explanation did not expose the method. He said he would, but he didn't. There is no explanation whatsoever as to HOW he does the peek. Normally, in these cases, the author will refer to another author and say that his method is just a variation of a method explained in this or that book. Which isn't an explanation either. So, please, authors and video producers: If you sell a trick, a book, an e-book, a DVD, a download, a whatever: PLEASE make sure that you really explain the method, not only hint at it. |
