Hello Friends,

This is my first post to this area of the Café, so I probably don't know the lingo you experts use. Please bear with me, then!

Just for looking at new cars at a local dealership a few years ago (from which I didn't buy), I won 4 one-dollar coins (US). These are gold in appearance, featuring the presidents Pierce, Buchanan, Hayes, and Jackson. They really aren't milled in the usual sense, but do have some spread out tick marks around the periphery.

I also have an English copper 2 New Pence. It matches the gold dollar coins in diameter so closely the discrepancy is not noticeable.

So my question: do any of you coin aficionados know of a silver non-US coin that also matches in size? I do have a Susan Anthony dollar (silver) that does, but I thought it would be nice to represent three different nations for this gold/copper/silver set. (I do mental magic in general, so this may lead in other directions). I bought a bag of a hundred foreign coins, but none of these is the same size.

Hope this isn't too goofy of a question for you T. Nelson Downs devotees,

Hello Thomas,

If I'm not mistaken, the 4 one-dollar coins (US) that you already have must be from the Presidential $1 Coin Program.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Presidential_$1_Coin_Program

According to the link above, their diameter is 26.49 mm (1.043 in).

For the 2 New Pence, I don't know if this is the one that you have, but from the next link, it says 25.91 mm. So pretty close in diameter.

For other coins with the same diameter, these links might help.

You'll find most of foreign coins ranked by country and by diameter.

So for example, to closely match your US Gold One Dollar, you have the Canadian $1.00 Loon and One Dollar (1988 ~ Present), the chinese 1/4 oz. Panda-Sterling, the Israeli ½ New Sheqel, and the South African 5 Rand.

But again, you'll have to double check to make sure it matches perfectly the diameter of your coins.

Hello Sebastian,

Many, many thanks for the detailed reply! You've given me lots of good options from which to choose.

Your first link caused me to inspect my gold president coins more carefully. What I referred to as tick marks on the edges indeed turned out to be a tiny, tiny inscription. My aging eyes would have never suspected that.

So again, thank you for taking the time to help me out.
