Some magicians I talk to say that all (or many) of their decks they regularly use have some sort of gaff. Marked cards, corner cuts, etc. Others say that they rarely (if ever) carry anything other than an ordinary deck.
What do you tend to carry? Jude |

Jude, I think I may be one of the few exceptions. because my I like to use a normal deck … preferably shuffled by a spectator prior to my performance.

Either my decks have no work in them at all--or when I put work in them, it's always the same...
One corner short and one marked card. Takes me about 20 seconds to put in the necessary work, and voila.

I usually carry a marked stripper deck. With it, I can perform tricks done with a normal deck, tricks done with a marked deck and tricks done with a stripper deck. Also I have several good tricks using Stripper function and Mark function together.
For special occasions such as wedding party, birthday party, magicians meeting or etc, of course I would bring special decks prepared for such occasions. Hideo Kato |

If you use the right patter, it is easy to ring in a gaff deck. I usually say, do you have cards w you? we can use yours. they almost never have them. If they do, I do something great with them. If not, this apparent lack of importance on which deck I use, mine or theirs, allows me to use a gaff deck with no suspicion on their part. suspicion? do a sw...ch

Nothing else but a regular shuffled deck

But please note, you can just as easily ring in a regular deck. Start with a gaff, then switch out. It works best for me with a simple switch. It really does not make sense to make a switch with the heat on the deck. So that means you don't need a switching device. the heat is off, just search for something in your bag with the deck in hand. quickly.

Countrymaven: Exactly. The bag I use is a small zippered "sports" duffle in which I keep a 7 inch x 4.5 inch "Big Box" Bicycle deck, which I pull out "accidentally" ("Oops!") before bringing out whatever else I am supposedly searching for. For some reason this usually generates a small giggle of surprise and, I believe, adds further distraction from the actual purpose of going into the bag. I'll later use the giant-sized deck, pre-arranged a la Stebbins or otherwise, in a subsequent trick.

Deckstacker: People mention "pocketspace" and doing many effects. I THINK YOU SHOULD CHARGE FOR YOUR ADVICE. People do not mind you carrying a bag, backpack, etc. This allows you to have more than you need for a gig. In fact, it seems much more natural than cramped pockets. It also is the best ungimmicked deck switching bag you will ever find.
I love your tip on the slight surprise or laugh. This is my tip: as the weather warms up, find some type of bag to replace the pockets of a coat, for your magic. Waist sports bag, backpack, soft business briefcase, whatever, to carry magic in. You can take this with you. It just opens up so many switching opportunities and carrying a little more than what you need. This is actually very helpful for me to remind myself. hehe. Please remember. I have messed with many videos on deck switching boxes and so forth . What we are mentioning is much smoother and better than these for virtually all magicians. Another thing, if the deck changes from all blanks to polka dots, and then you switch you are going to have a harder time. I like using gaffed decks that are very normal looking. I also use regular decks. but it is great to have the freedom to use what you want and to switch it out.... hehe. |

Best cold deck story I ever heard:
Having pre-arranged a cold deck so as to give Player A a flush, Player B a full house, Player C four of a kind and himself a straight flush, the poker cheat hid his stacked deck in the inner hat band of his high-domed derby. He then waited until it was his turn to deal, shuffled, and at precisely the right moment had a well-rehearsed confederate onlooker dent the crown of his derby with a seemingly spontaneous farewell pat on the head as he left the room. Feigning great annoyance, the cheat proceeded to yank the hat from his head with his free hand and used his fisted hand (which held the deck-in-play) to pound the dome of his derby back into shape from the inside. In so doing he dropped the original cards into the hat, snatched the stacked deck from the hat band, and then with one swift movement clamped the hat back onto his head without spilling any of the loose cards inside. Thereupon, he then quicky proceeded to deal a round that enabled him to win all of the chips on the table. Moral: So long as your moves are confident, logical and natural, you can get away with d--- near anything! (sly grin)

I posted this on the Perverse Magic thread of the Genii Forum on March 1, 2007 and it also appears on page 100 of the book “Gerald Deutsch’s Perverse Magic: The First Sixteen Years”.
Perverse Ambitions Card Effect 1 The magician has a card selected (say the 6C) and shuffled back into the deck and when he riffles the deck the 6C comes up to the top. The selected card is buried back into the deck and it again comes to the top. The magician cuts the deck and shows that the 6C can appear anywhere he wants. 2 “It’s so simple,” the magician explains. “No one would suspect that a magician would use a deck with all cards the same.” As he shows all the cards are the 6C. He puts the deck on the table. 3 “Look, you can really make this dramatic,” he says. “Give me a number from 1 to 10.” The spectator does and the magician tells the spectator to count that number and there is – not the 6C but the KH! The magician is puzzled. He looks at the next card – a KH. He spreads the deck – all KH. No 6C! He is completely bewildered. The postings noted above have explanations (if needed).. |

I carry around a regular deck to practice with but since I perform professionally I tend to use gaff decks. I only do one card trick in my show so I don't mind a dedicated gaffed deck.

The strange thing I am noticing is that when you start magic, you get a gaffed deck but you are not really good at using it. YOu learn card magic. But when you really get good at cards, that is the time a gaffed or partially gaffed deck can do real wonders.
You can do a miracle, sw--ch the deck etc...... So you have to really be good, to use a gaffed deck to its maximum potential. |

Are we talking gaffed cards in a normal deck or a gaff deck?
I feel like a gaff deck requires good audience management and confidence. I hidden gaff card feels instinctual at this point. easy to get in and out. Plus, I can give out signed cards as a souvenir from a regular deck. |

Depends what I am performing. I like a lot of color changing decks and blank deck routines. If we are talking normal carry, I usually just have a regular deck with me because it is most versatile and I don’t have to worry about adding anything to it. Especially since I usually go through a fresh deck in about 2 hours.

I'm not organized or careful enough to keep a deck in good shape. I do restaurant magic and my life is so much simpler just using a regular deck for everything.
There is so much you can do with a regular deck that for regular audiences I absolutely don't think I'm sacrificing anything by not using gaff decks. I think most of the market for gaff decks is to bring various effects into the skill range of more people. Nothing wrong with that. Suppose a genie offered to give you 40 of the best gaffed decks OR the knowledge and skill to do the ten best tricks with an ordinary deck? Which would you choose? |

Intermediate card handlers tend to avoid them. Also, as in Mike's case above, context is a big part of whether using gaff decks is even a practical consideration. We're in agreement here. When any beginner uses a gaff deck, it generally reeks of "there's something funny about the cards." When an expert uses the same deck for a routine, it can make a very good trick impenetrable.

Great point Steven. I think coin magic is a decent analogy.
With coin sleights, you can do amazing things. But you have to be good . A beginner with gaffed coins may cause the focus to go to the coins. But an experienced coin magician can use regular coins and gaffs to do miracles. They often have a plan to ring the gaff out at the right time too. |
