I wanting to perform Billy Mccomb’s half dyed silk routine but I’m not a big fan of how it’s written up. It currently uses two gimmicks and I would love to only have to use one. The idea of going to the pocket to switch them doesn’t appeal to me. I thought I’d ask if anyone had any better idea that have worked for them. I’m wanting to use it as an opener to my stage show.

Yes several professional magicians have reworked the routine, it involves using a very large gimmick, and they have been sold out since they were introduced.
You actually have to learn the routine from the instructions, and after getting proficient at the the routine, you should see how to convert to one gimmick. At this point you will have to make the gimmick out of small plastic bottle or something similar. None of these magicians have published or offered DVDs to their one gimmick method to my knowledge. Don't understand your complaint of removing a silk from you pocket. That is how the effect begins, so it should not look out of place to the audience. Stevens Magic sells a Billy McComb Video DVD. This is not a trick for an opener, it is more a middle of the show effect. |

Thank you for your reply Bill. I recently bought Bill Mccombs routine form Abbotts magic. The part I didn’t like wasn’t the taking the silk out at the beginning it was the switching of the gimmick when I put one silk in my inside pocket per the routine. As for the placement of the routine in the act I would agree but for my act it fits perfectly there.

I find it interesting that you don't like one of the best switches to use on stand-up magic. It works, I have used it for many years. I would be interested what you come up with for a switch. You do realize you are talking at the time, and it is just a casual moment while you art talking. It goes unnoticed unless you draw attention to it.
I guess you could use a Topit, and get Abbott's Gung gimmick for a steal. Maybe you would like pining gimmicks all over your clothing. I do use these gimmicks and many others, but not for this routine. In my opinion using a Top Hat for ditch box would be more obvious, if someone would want to think back on the next phase of the routine. But you can use it, you just have to be even more careful that you don't move your hand away from the drop point to grab the other gimmick. With my years of searching good methods, found an excellent solution to this that works perfectly. Tim Star, an excellent magician gave me the information when I ran into him at a convention. This meant more work at adding some parts to the hat, but it was worth it. |

You might try Milbourne Christopher's "Snappy Color Change" using a magic wand. You can find it in volume 2 of Rice's Encyclopedia of magic. You'll also find a version of it in The Magic Nook's "Dollar Store Magic" Book 2 on making your own color change silk gimmicks. Use the wand in the first part of the half dyed silk routine, and complain you didn't wave it hard enough, which you apparently do the second time. It would be kind of cute to make the other half of the silk be colored with bright colored rainbow of stars (for example) as if you over-did it when waving the wand, but that's just a suggestion to make it even more snappy.

If you're that adamant on not using more than one gimmick, Levent has his routine here:

Bill I’ll have to admit I haven’t tried it while doing my preset yet. You may be absolutely correct. That is how Mccomb did it for years and it worked so... I work on it some more. Thank you again for your thoughts.
Doug. Thank you also for the alternative. I will look into that. |

I've performed the half-dyed hank using a palmo for a number of years. Works great with 15" half-dyed silks (I'm not aware of other sizes for half-dyed, but I'm not as knowledgeable as others). If you know how to use a dye tube, you'll be able to use the same manipulation for the palmo.

I ended up looking into the Levent gimmick and I’m very pleased with this product.

The Levent gimmick is good but it only holds a 5 momme 15" silk. You will find the silks will wear out pretty fast. Using 6 momme silks will add a lot of life to the silk.
As for the switch, you are over thinking it. I simply switch in the outer coat pocket. I don't like going inside my jacket for fear of missing the pocket. The Palmo works but I like the showing of the two silks in the two hands. One thing to think about is changing the color of the silks. I have used yellow and red for years as it does not show the dirt as quickly.

The best thing about the Abbott-Made Half-Dyed routine are the gimmicks.
Wrapped and twisted inside a silk, due to their weight and heft, they make a PERFECT self-defense weapon for Magicians who work bad neighborhoods. Also, listen to what Richard says about using red/yellow silks as they don't show the dirt as quickly. |

Nick Difatte has a nice routine for this on his "Through Being Cool" DVD. It only uses two silks and just one gimmick. Check it out if you get the chance.

Cody Fisher has a unique variation of the half-dyed silk on his Penguin Lecture which has ALOT of great stand up magic (Cody is a great thinker in magic... some really clever things).
Cody seems to think the half dyed silk makes a good opener... so you're in good company. |

I have used this trick as an opener, and for me it worked well, but that might not be true for everyone.
