If I were to get the cane from Fantasio, which type of silk should I buy?

Whatever silk you buy, and it really doesn't matter, make sure that it be at least 18 X 18 inches (2 should be used for the standard vanish) and (1) 36 X 36 inches if you are going to do the one handed vanish. Anything smaller will look strange, say cane to 12 inch silk. . The idea is for the cane to dissolve into the silk(s). A "diamond cut" silk is really good to use for "Appearing Canes".
JMHO Cheers!

I would not suggest using the Fantasio canes. Don't get me wrong, Fantasio makes great products, but I have used the Fantasio canes and the metal canes and the metal ones perform a lot better. I also use diamond cut silks because they fit easier inside the canes. Just my 2 cents worth.

From my experience, the Fantasio Appearing cane can only handle a 12" silk and even the Diamond cut may be pushing the limit a bit.
For the Vanishing can any size silk will work. For both models use only pure silk, not a mixed fibers such as rayon and silk. Hope this helps. |

OK thanks everyone. I am buying the canes jus for practices not performing so buying the metal ones will be more costly for me due to budget.

I agree in not using the appearing Fantasio Cane for a silk to cane. If you do a ribbon ok but silk has to collapse first before the cane can extend.
I even use 5 mm very thin silk in the metal appearing canes.

If you look at the other posts, you will find that I am not the magician who often says use a diamond cut silk. However, for the appearing cane, it will save you a lot of grief. More grief can be saved by getting good metal canes. They are the same length show after show. My experience with Fantasio appearing canes is that they get shorter every show. Go with the metal ones.

The appearing Fantasio cane is terrible.

I have never been impressed with appearing canes, metal or plastic. They always appeared to me to be what they actually are.
I would wonder what percentage of laymen could reasonably explain the trick after seeing it done. Steve

They all seem to have the same flaw when I have seen them performed; the sprials show on the black part. Maybe the lighting was wrong. That`s the reason I`ve never bought one. Seems the layman could figure it out if they see them as I do.

So far so good for me with the Fantasio appearing version. Perhaps I got a better one, unknown.
Mine is used with 9 inch red silk for opening act to music.

The Appearing Cane (metal,) is VERY effective if done in the knot. I explained this years ago (well before Shimada,) in an old set of lecture notes and have never seen anyone do it correctly. The cane should not "pop" from the knot, the silk is tied, then the corners dropped and the cane is seen to be tied in it. Done that way, it truly surprised both laymen and magicians completely as it is unexpected and never "springs" open.
Another pretty way to use the Appearing Cane, shown to me by Pete Peterson a zillion years ago, is to wrap the silk around the collapsed cane one time. Now, toss the bundled silk high into the air. Because of the wrap, it takes a second for the cane to force its way open to expand and it truly appears that the silk visibly changes to a cane in mid-air, well above the magician and out of his hands. It's very pretty. Both those methods provide a way to make the Appearing Cane NOT look like exactly what it is. |
