Just watched the two sample routines on the web page - very simple equivoque that we all used when starting out in magic. Won't fool any magicians but entertaining for spectators?

Isn't it refreshing to think that the simple stuff we started out with is still worthy of fooling people??? A shame we feel the need to graduate to more involved methods and sleights along with focusing on fooling other magicians rather than laypeople. Hooray for John Carey and all the magicians who realize how effective the old chestnuts can still be...and realize that it's also PRESENTATION that makes a trick, not just the moves.

A bit odd that they would choose the one they did for the demo... nothing against John, but it is hardly a stunner. A piece with a bit more power under the hood would have sold me more effectively. However, maybe it is a case of under promise and over deliver...

Reminds me of Sankeys Heads Up Penney,Dime,Nickle & the spectator chose the Penney for the kicker tailside up ! I like it with the dice very nice !

Stunning. Absolutely stunning. The trick, though? Meh.

Try the demo'd effect on laypeople instead of the magic club members...we tend to get jaded when it comes to effects like this. With the proper presentation this could be a nice little stunner in between all of the card tricks audiences never get bored with.

Maybe it's the colors ... maybe it's the clear dice ... but something about this appeals to me.
I pulled the trigger. Oscar |

I think they only felt the need of including routines. They are very pretty dice so you can think what to do with them, that's it. I will order them.

I guess we all just like new and shiny things. I can see the demo effect (1 red die and 3 clear) being done with one ace and 3 blank cards or even a silver coin and 3 copper ones. But the translucent dice and all the different colors would be nice “eye candy” to the specs as well. (They like shiny things too).

The point was that if you're *selling* the video to magicians, it usually helps to demo something people don't already know to whet their appetite. Lots of people will still buy it, because lots of folks respect Carey's work (for good reason), but as a selling point, you usually want to "put your best foot forward," and make it clear why people should purchase. So, right now I'm not sure if this is worth buying because John Carey teaches neat ways to update effects we all already know, but with dice... or if he's teaching something brand new with a lot of the effects. That's why I'm confused by the choice of the demo. |

I would be interested to know how many of the effects on this dvd could be repeated in front of the same spectator as it appears that equivoque is used on some of them along with the hotrod number force.

Repeating stuff is always a bit... Meh...
I think with this, it's about picking 3 routines and linking them together...

Personally as much as I like John Carey's stuff and I am a fan of his work if the majority of the dvd isn't repeatable due to equivoque being the main technique I don't think this is for me but I do wish him every success with it. |
