The Vault -Red Pill - Chris Ramsay

The Hype:

Everything happens in their hands and in their minds!

Two effects straight from Chris Ramsay's personal working repertoire, this is something he's been using to book himself countless corporate/private events. An interactive routine which guarantees a personal connection with your audience.

Two decks are presented to two spectators. One open pack of blue cards and one sealed deck of red ones. The sealed deck is placed within one of the spectator's hands. The other spectator selects a card from the open pack. Moments later, the selected card has now vanished from the open pack and impossibly appears inside the cellophane of the sealed deck!

Imagine showing a spectator a sealed deck of cards, placing it between their hands and having them think of a playing card. Now imagine that the card they just thought of is now impossibly trapped and sealed inside the cellophane which has never left their hands! The best part is, everything is fully examinable and they can decide to tear it open to attempt to find out how it was done, or keep it sealed as an impossible souvenir!

My Take:
First, what some might consider the negatives. There are some arts and crafts expected. If you purchase the more expensive version, the gimmick they send will cut out only one step. The advantage for the download is that you already have what it take to make a gimmick and you can own the trick this afternoon. The other thing is that this makes a fantastic giveaway for a performance but each time you do, you are giving away a brand new deck of cards and a few minutes of prep work. Personally, I wouldn't give the deck away. The trick is strong enough without that.

Now, for the good stuff. After the performance, the deck can be totally examined. There is almost nothing to see. And,what there is will never be found. Chris says that the set up takes him from 5 to 10 minutes, but that for your first time, 10 to 15 minutes is more realistic. He also says that a smart thing to do is make a few at once.

Chris teaches two versions of this trick. The first uses Equivoque and he bases his on the work of Joshua Quinn. The second does require a force and you are free to choose your own method here. There are no difficult moves and this has a killer impact on your audience. After showing the selected card inside the plastic wrap of the sealed deck, Chris says here is where the magic starts. However, to do this version requires opening the deck and this would require a new setup for each performance. If this is something you would like to do and just carry with you, I would stop before the magic starts. This leaves you with a non-damaged deck that could be used over and over again. If you are working a party or a bar, I would suggest that you make up a few decks with different cards. If you perform for someone and then they see you do it for someone else and a different card travels, I don't think it could get much stronger than that.

Both the Equivoque method and the forced selection are great but if you decide not to open the deck, I think the Equivoque version works a little better as you don't have to show a card of the opposite color inside the deck. There is really no reason that you would have to open the deck for this version.

As a bonus, Chris teaches his instant card change which was previously available as a separate download. Not the easiest move but it does make the trick a lot more eye-popping.

A section on sleights is included. He gives his take on the riffle force with a small addition that I will be using. He finishes up with a section on tips and ideas. He includes a secret link to a page you can print and hand out as it does a nice cold read for you. Nice touch.

Conclusion: This is a nice powerful effect that is not hard to do. This is Chris' baby and obviously he would like you to do the full routine. However, if you don't wish to lose a deck each time or spend a lot of time making setups, you can just do the Equivoque version and use the same setup over and over. The full routine is much more powerful and worth the extra time but the other still kills. I would suggest getting the download instead of the full trick. You save a few bucks, you already own the necessary supplies and with a download, you can have it now. I would recommend this.
