On September 7th 2001 The Magic Café officially went online and became a reality.
Very few people knew of our existence and most of those folks predicted the site would never last and would in fact close within a few short months if not sooner. Obviously we beat the odds and have since grown into arguably the largest and most active magic site on the internet. Along the way we have made many changes to both our software and hardware that has utimately made the Café easier to navigate and provided even more outstanding features and all in an effort to help our members enjoy their online experience with us even more. Indeed, creating a meeting place for magicians to gather in an atmosphere of civility and comfort was but one of our goals. We have also strived to keep the functionality of the site as close to cutting edge as possible. This endeavor has not been an easy one and has required a lot of ingenuity and hardwork on the part of our technical crew, Gene and Mary B. Their unselfish loyalty, friendship and dedication have proved their worth, time and time again. Both of these folks have spent countless hours of planning and experimentation and all in order to provide our membership with the most user friendly and featured filled website possible. But creativity and software are only a part of the vehicle which carries the Café along the magic highway as it were. Beneath all these pretty lights, postings and programming code there sits the heart of the Café - our SERVER. In the begining we were located on a very small server which also hosted a slew of other websites. As our membership grew, we began to consume even more and more bandwidth and server resources. This ultimately caused a hardship on the other websites which shared our server and we were politely asked to seek out larger facilities (a bigger server) as it were. We have done this several times. Having said all that, I want to let everyone know we are making yet another move! However, unlike our previous relocations this one should prove to be a more permanent home for us. Not only will we have a ton more space and bandwidth available, we are upgrading to an even faster processor that is using the most advanced technology available. What this means to the Café is even better security, faster load times and the ability to handle our foreseen growth well into the future. In that light, please know we will be making the transition sometime this week. Rather then totally closing down the site, we have elected to keep the Café available for reading only. Meaning, as we start the transfer proceedings, you will be able to read the various forums but will not have the ability to actually post, nor will you be able to send or receive private messages. As we begin our move we will place a NOTICE under our famous logo, informing members we are moving. When that message vanishes (just like magic), you will know that the move has been completed and you are actually viewing the Café on our NEW server, and posting may resume as usual. This move will take several days, but at least you can still enjoy reading the various messages on the site. We felt that this was a better alternative then totally closing the site during the move and will probably help some of you catch-up on a few forums! I want to thank all of you for your continued support and understanding during this small inconvenience.

Steve, I'm concerned that you won't be that pleased with the results of your move for very long.
Until you have multiple servers, you're going to keep hitting bottlenecks and spending too much money. You should have several small cheap servers instead of one big monster. What happens if one of several craps out? you throw it in the trash and get another one. If the monster craps out, do you have a fallback plan? Just some things to think about. I wish you success. Give me a call if you wish to chat about architecting your site. Frank

I know I'm a bit new and mostly read rather than post, but I'd like to give my thanks to the Magic Café staff and all their help in making this forum possible. It is a great resource for magicians every where. Thanks again!

If Starsini's platform assumptions of the Magic Café are correct, his advice is DEAD ON. I have worked in the IT departement of many companies and multiple servers are de riguor disaster recovery procedures. Starsini's words are smart ones.

Twin, double Tuple HP, Marathon servers are what I use for my 911 Fire, Police and Medical installs. I take care of a pair now and they are the best. A bit spendy though aroud 500K for the pair. Frank has it right when he says many to avoid a performance hit when you lose one. I would see if he has the time to help build a long term solution.

Being an IT guy myself, let me wish you and your crew a smooth tranisition and bountiful bandwidth at your new location.
If you're looking for sister sites to off-load some traffic, let me know Steve. I have a couple servers and a T1 that might be able to assist. Best, Mike |
