Hi,
I'm Steve, thanks for having me. Let's see, something about myself.... Many moons ago as a kid I subscribed to a magazine called Famous Monsters of FilmLand. The publisher was a guy named Forrest J. Ackerman, who passed away a few years back. I'm currently watching the entire O.J. Simpson trial thanks to a YouTube channel that has uploaded all the footage. It's something to listen to while I practice my D'Amico Second. So there's that. Oh, I've taken great inspiration over the years from Tommy Wonder, Eugene Burger, Harry Lorayne, David Roth, Allan Ackerman, Fred Kaps, Bill Malone and of course the obvious (Marlo, Vernon, Houdini etc.) and the like. I do mostly close-up work and recently began experimenting with mentalism a bit more broadly in my routines. Also, I'm a scotch enthusiast. Looking forward to conversing with you all and I hope to bring something of value to the forum. Warm regards, S. Postscript: I'm currently reading Harry Lorayne's: Ageless Memory (The Memory Expert's Prescription To A Razor-Sharp Mind) but I've forgotten what page I left off on... Postpostscript: I love scotch. P.P.P.S: I really love scotch.

Anyone who enjoys scotch, can't be too bad a person, but, double lifts, and Elmsley's, makes me wonder. Oh well, I guess we'll have to put up with you!
Welcome, anyway!

(checks for a drone outside) Uh oh! I was just showing someone a trick using an Elmsley and only hours before I joined the Café I was working on a new double lift technique that is coincidentally similar (in appearance) to another Michiganders double, one Mr. Ron Bauer's TTT.
How did you know??? Ha! Thank you for the welcome, Mr. Oslund, hope all is well with you.

I must be a better mentalist than I thought I was! (Look out Max Maven!!)
Although I have known, or know, most of the cardicians, like Alex Elmsley, Ed Narlo, Charlie Miller,Jon Racherbaumer, Ricky Jay, et al, I always get 1/2 way through the 21 card trick, and, forget what's next. I usta pitch Two Card Monte 70 years ago in a side show, and, had pails full of quarters, in the wagon! Yer welcome...I just got paroled from the Veterans Hospital, so I'm in a good mood. Somewhere in the Café, you'll find where the card guys hang out. Now, I gotta go work on my "Solar powered electric deck"...... O

I need to visit the Magic Castle one of these days so I can ask Max Maven to tell me some Tommy Wonder stories. Like a few magicians I've heard of the 21-Card Trick was my gateway into magic when I was a child. My grandmother showed me almost 30 years ago when I was 12 and that was the spark!
She passed away 4 years later and I don't think my Dad has ever forgave her for piquing my interest into the art because to this day whenever I visit family back in America I'm still bothering him with it all these years later. LOL! I still perform the trick as a nod to my grandma but instead of the way she taught me I do the Bill Malone variation that has work from Marlo, Draun and Solomon combined. They let you out??? I'm sure it wasn't because of good behavior, ha! In all seriousness, glad to see you're doing good and thank you for your service. S.

It's even more fun when you WORK the Castle! I drove the young guys nuts with Coin-Go! In 1951 when I "worked" at the EdMar shop in Norfolk, they sold for $.25, but nobody bought one. (Nobody knew the carnie "hook up"!) When I tipped the side show pitch to the locals, we couldn't keep them in stock! Years later, when I lectured, I sold hundreds at $5.00.
Your grandma, like me, probably did the XXI card trick the original way! Malone probably uses Arabic numbers' . Heck! ANYONE can do it with Arabic numbers! Well, it wasn't actually a parole. I did a Houdini. Gen Grant sold the "secret", years ago, for 25 cents. I had joined the Navy in the old days. ("wooden ships, and iron men." --and, now, we're all rusty.) Yer welcome! I learned a lot, grew up a lot, and got college out of it. The flag is up! The cookhouse is serving lunch, and the early marks are on the midway.. I gotta eat and make the first bally on the side show. See ya on the next lot! O

Working at the Castle is a life goal, certainly!
$.25 to $5.00, a one thousand nine-hundred percent profit increase, now that's how it's done! Yes, she did it the original way and I did too for a while and around the age of 15 I used a slight modification at the very end that I read in a magic book. I performed that for people for ten years until I got busted at a party by someone vaguely familiar with the principle and a few other people mentioned they kinda remember being showed that by their weird Uncle at Thanksgiving, Easter.... National Meatball Day or SOME type of family gathering event. That annoyed me a little that someone who was a non-magician knew the method or approximately so and I ditched the trick for a while until I learned the routine I use now. I almost joined the service 20 or so years ago, I was in love at the time and let a girl (and my Mom) talk me out of it. I have only a few regrets, that is one. I should probably grab a bite to eat myself! I was out earlier hitting up thrift stores searching for anything weird or bizarre. I ended up buying a curious looking stuffed chicken that I've named 'Pedro' for $2 bucks. Enjoy! S.

Welcome Steve Malcolm,
It is heartening to hear about a Grandma that started a Kid out in Magic. I know of a few great Cardmen who lost their edge over a few drinks to loosen them up. Word to the wise. Check out "The Workers" for hard core Card info and "Table Hoppers and Party Strollers" for Card advice as well. Don't get Dick started on Thrift Store Magic. He wrote the book. My partner Tom and I had to stop buying thrift store stuff that could be useful "someday" as we were running out of room to put it. LOL -Mary Mowder |

Thank you, Mary!
Over the years I have reflected upon the occasion when she showed/taught me the trick back in 1989. She was born in the 1920s and for the life of me I cannot figure out how she knew it herself. Unfortunately from the ages of between twelve to sixteen I did not have the presence of mind to ask who taught her. To my understanding the 21-Card Trick was first published in 1590s, then in the 1870s, 1953, 83, the last two that would fit into the timeline of when my grandma was alive were both published by Ed Marlo and that was not the version she showed me. So it had to be the original version that I previously mentioned in another post in this intro. Someone had to have shown her, and that person had to have been taught it be someone else, etc. The connection is a mystery! How frustrating and delightful all at the same time! Thank you for the concern and it may please you to know that in the past 20 years that I have been of the legal drinking age under the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984, I have not consumed any alcohol while performing magic. I'm not saying I haven't had a few drams of scotch while in the comfort of my home and practicing magic, just not in actual performance. Ha! LOL! My fiancée and I were just talking about needing a bigger place as we were walking around the thrift store. I found this old gigantic wooden chest that was being sold for $40 dollars that instantly made me think of the Metamorphosis illusion. I said.... "We're gonna have to walk back and get the car." Her: "Where are we gonna put it?" Me: "Great question, do we need to have a couch???" Her: "I can't tell of you're being serious right now, but ummm yes... yes we do." Me: "****." LMAO! S.
