I wonder if my wife will notice if I ask for her ring to be engraved and then I “borrow” it occasionally! That way her 50th birthday present will work perfectly with my 50th birthday present? Thinks about it for a moment....Nope, probably not worth the risk!

My intention was not to hijack the thread. I personally have a rhyme going through my head since yesterday that goes "ashes, ashes, all fall down" As a young child, me and my gang would hold hands in a circle, turn the circle as we sing out the poem and fall down into the grass at the end. (We didn't know we were playing at dying from the plague. We were just spinning, singing and falling) Really cool to know the origin of the rhyme.

That's fascinating Reese, I had heard of the ashes version being used in America whilst as a kid in the UK we did exactly the same as you in the playground but used the attishoo version. I looked into it years ago when the Cross Rail excavations started in London and an archeologist friend of mine was involved in the excavation of the plague pits that were unearthed. The connection is actually an urban legend and there is no evidence that the rhyme is about the plague at all. But as with a good urban legend it has gone pretty far and wide. It came up as a local pub quiz question a couple of years ago and no one queried it (and I kept quiet). As a quick experiment I asked a group of friends about the rhyme last night with my best innocent face on and all of them agreed it was about the plague! I for one won't be saying "actually"

Re the urban legend, here's what Wikipedia has, suggesting the connection is unlikely:
Since the 20th century, the rhyme has often been associated with the Great Plague which happened in England in 1665, or with earlier outbreaks of the Black Death in England. Interpreters of the rhyme before the Second World War make no mention of this;[24] by 1951, however, it seems to have become well established as an explanation for the form of the rhyme that had become standard in the United Kingdom. Peter and Iona Opie, the leading authorities on nursery rhymes, remarked: The invariable sneezing and falling down in modern English versions have given would-be origin finders the opportunity to say that the rhyme dates back to the Great Plague. A rosy rash, they allege, was a symptom of the plague, and posies of herbs were carried as protection and to ward off the smell of the disease. Sneezing or coughing was a final fatal symptom, and "all fall down" was exactly what happened.[25][26] The line Ashes, Ashes in colonial versions of the rhyme is claimed to refer variously to cremation of the bodies, the burning of victims' houses, or blackening of their skin, and the theory has been adapted to be applied to other versions of the rhyme.[2] In its various forms, the interpretation has entered into popular culture and has been used elsewhere to make oblique reference to the plague.[27] Folklore scholars regard the theory as baseless for several reasons: The plague explanation did not appear until the mid-twentieth century.[21] The symptoms described do not fit especially well with the Great Plague.[26][28] The great variety of forms makes it unlikely that the modern form is the most ancient one, and the words on which the interpretation are based are not found in many of the earliest records of the rhyme (see above).[2][29] European and 19th-century versions of the rhyme suggest that this "fall" was not a literal falling down, but a curtsy or other form of bending movement that was common in other dramatic singing games.[30] |

A wonder to me that "Ring around the Rosey" was passed on kid by kid over many generations. My time was 1964, '65.

I'm so looking forward to this. I do not have any DOPs, but do perform Spectre and WA.
I also have an unfinished TMHHIE home-made project, following the Prof's instructions. Gotta get to it. |

I heard from my bindery today. He is promising shipment next week, but there might be a problem with the spine stamp. Still waiting to hear back on that. Once they arrive, I then have to age them. If nothing is wrong with the spine stamp, the earliest release would be just before Hallowe'en, but that would be pushing very hard indeed. A more reasonable estimate might be around November 15.

So much to put together--and something special from Dan's shop--along with previous commitments (I'm giving a talk on M.R. James at Eton next week in celebration of the 115th anniversary of Ghost Stories of an Antiquary) . . . and then Thanksgiving. Well, in order to do everything right, and do the books justice, release has been set (at last!) for 6 December.
This way, no one will be made to wait for delivery once they have paid. Everything will be ready to ship without delay. Thanks for asking. BC
