Steve Short on Johnny Hart.

Good to see Steve Short last Thursday evening, talking about the life and career of the late Johnny Hart,
world-class manipulator, whose special feature was the magical appearance of budgerigars.

Johnny was born near Blackpool in Lytham St.Annes in 1943. He taught himself magic from a book he found in the local library! He also became friendly with retired international escape artiste and illusionist ‘Murray’, who in retirement had opened a magic shop in Blackpool’s Cookson Street. Murray helped him with advice and in 1961, at the age of eighteen Johnny became the Magic Circle’s first ‘Young Magician of the Year’!

Then taken under the wing of Harry Stanley (agent, magician, magical dealer and entrepreneur), he was soon appearing on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show,’ America’s top late-night television show, on which he was to feature on a further five occasions! He was also seen several times in UK television’s David Nixon Show.

He went on to appear many times in Las Vegas and Reno spectaculars and was hugely successful in the U.S.
Johnny appeared in Blackpool many times; at Feldman’s (later the Queens) and the ABC theatres and at the Opera House, featuring alongside the top UK stars of the day, Danny La Rue, Bruce Forsyth, Max Bygraves, Frank Ifield, Helen Shapiro, Mike Yarwood and The Beatles etc.

Johnny Hart passed away, aged 75 on December 11, 2018.

This was a fascinating, well-researched talk about a local lad who really did rather well!
