Hi everyone. I was not able to find a thread where this has already been asked. Can you perform tricks, such as the ones in Expert Coin Magic and The Amazing Miracles of Shigeo Takagi, using a coin purse with a zipper? Has anyone tried this?

I think it would matter depending on how the purse is used during the effect. If you are just carrying the coins in it or hiding a coin or gaff under it at some point, It would work fine. However, I know several routines that utilize the clasp so a zipper would not work.

Thank you. I wanted to know whether a purse with a zipper could be used during a trick like David Roth's purse and glass. I have read the explanation of one of Dr. Sawa's tricks and in that he uses a purse with a zipper.

I use one all the time, for many routines. I love the David Arthur stuff in Kaufmans Coin Magic

Thanks. Will get a couple, then. The other type isn't available where I live

The purse and glass demonstrates several useful strategies in coin magic. Unpack the lessons and apply them to your effects. Merely performing the routine as some kind of ritual unto itself leads to knowledge of the performer and his context. That's a slow summoning compared to learning directly when he offers to teach. The Conjuring Arts Research Center or Café member Michael Rubenstein can help you from there.

Years ago, I once picked up a zippered leather coin purse on a trip to Mexico. (I recall it had a snazzy pyramid embossed on one side -- if I find it I'll post a pic.)
I used it now and then as one of my coin purses and all was good. (I rely on different purses to carry different coins for different effects.) One day, I realized the stitching had come loose along one edge of the zipper -- and because edge of the leather extended beyond the zipper, this opening was not apparent. With a little squeeze, the purse opened its heart to me and told me secrets even when zipped closed. Hmmmm, I thought -- it was a happy accident! |
