Hi
I have bought Jeff McBride's videos - The Art of Card Manipulation but am really struggling with some of what appear to be basic moves (eg back palming). Today I have received a catalogue from a UK supplier who sells every make of card and in this cataolgue are cards called manipulation cards - these are much thinner than standard cards - is this where I am going wrong? (These cards are about 4 times the price of a standard deck @£10-£12.) Tony Tax

Tony,
I don't think you really need the special cards (although they do seem to make some of it a bit easier). The key for me was to properly prepare your cards, just like McBride explains in his video. With that preparation and starting with only a few cards at a time, you'll see that you can do it. Keep at it! :pirate: |

Thanks for this. I have just ordered some Bee cards like Jeff uses in his videos and some fanning powder - so time to get busy! TonyTax

You don't need special cards. Those cards are used for when someone needs to back palm a lot of cards. And in the 1st Jeff McBride video only teaches how to back palm one card anyways. But down the road you might want them to back palm 20 cards or something.

Thanks everyone for the advice.
The Bee deck arrived and is being broken in - but straight away I can feel that this deck seems more flexible than the Bicycle deck I was using. A couple of hours practicing back palming moves with the Bicycle deck left my fingers feeling very raw. The only other thing to say to novices like me is practice your card sleights/manipulations on the floor and save a lot of time and backache in picking up the 100's of cards that get dropped and flutter around the room! It will also save you from the phenomenon of the truly unexplainable disappearing card routine. You know - you drop 52 cards on the floor but can only find 51 of them! Regards TonyTax

Nice tip! Seems so obvious now that you point it out but I suffered, needlessly it appears, the discomfort of continually bending over to retrieve the cards. Sitting on a nicely padded carpet in front of a mirror I have on a closet door makes perfect sense.....thanks for pointing out the obvious to me!!! And good luck with your manipulations!

I remember when I first got into pivoting. My fingers got scally.

Michael Ammar has a saying that even though magic and magicians are very diverse, there is one thing common to all, they all gathered cards from the floor at some point in their lives
I use Nielsen's palming decks, they are very beautiful, but what Jeff describes in his video is crucial. You have to break the decks, and believe what you couldn't do a month ago next month you'll be able to do perfectly. It's hard to believe, but you have to train your muscles and your brain. |

Jeff McBride also uses his own brand of cards that have a flesh colored back. I have one autographed by him in my collection.
