Hello, I am wondering if anybody has good recommendations for magic books. I have been practicing magic for about a year now. My collection consists of:
1. Magic and Showmanship- Henning Nelms 2. Strong Magic- Darwin Ortiz 3. Designing Miracles- Darwin Ortiz 4. Royal Road to Card Magic- Hugard/Braue 5. Expert Card Technique- Hugard/Braue 6. The Magic Book- Harry Lorayne 7. Modern Magic- Professor Hoffman 8. Modern Coin Magic- JB Bobo Any more good card books? Also looking for good books on mentalism and psychology in general. If you could, leave a message. Thanks! |

Wow friend! That is a stellar collection you have there. I might suggest the Card College series of Roberto Giobbi. And the Inner Secrets series by Lewis Ganson (on Dai Vernon). The mentalist bible remains Corinda's Thirteen Steps. And do not overlook Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic! Several of my Go-To effects were inspired by material in that course!
Ciao for now Erik

First of all, congratulations for your magic library! Although small, I see you have opted, from the beginning, for a certain number of great books on magic theory and not just books crammed with tricks!
Bravo! I will add to your list books on card magic, since that's what I feel I can recommend better than other branches: - Card College 1 to 5 by Roberto Giobbi - Card College Light series (three books) by Roberto Giobbi - Mentalissimo & Destination Zero by John Bannon - Semi-Automatic Card Tricks series (11 books so far) by Steve Beam The Card College 1 to 5 are books that teach you (beautifully) sleights, presentation, theory and some very good tricks. The others are essentially tricks/routines that require little or intermediate techniques to be able to perform them. As for theory I would add - Scripting Magic by Peter McCabe - Maximum Entertainment by Ken Weber Mark |

Fantastic collection Josh!
I'd also recommend the Giobbi books mentioned by others, along with his Card College video (available from his website). Scarne on Card Tricks, and the Karl Fulves books on Self-Working Card Magic are also terrific. But quite honestly the three books by Giobbi on self-working card magic (Light, Lighter, Lightest) have killer material and also teach good presentation, and I wish I'd started with those. |

Obviously Featherly knows nothing about my books. Careful who you "listen" to.

You won't "go wrong" with ANY of Harry's books! He was using BICYCLES when they were still UNICYCLES!!!
Ken Weber KNOWS, about "MAXIMUM ENTERTAINMENT"! I would recommend it! (get it as soon as possible!) Tarbell (7 volumes!!!) was the "book" of my youth. The patter & presentation are somewhat outdated, but you will learn PRINCIPLES!!!!! Most of my act, I learned from Doc Tarbell. PRINCIPLES!!! It was originally a correspondence course, first published in 1927. I think the current price is $20.00 per volume. The Mark Wilson "Complete Course in Magic" (one volume) "co written" by Walter Gibson, uses "sequential" illustrations which are very helpful in learning "moves". The latest edition is from the late '80s. (Gibson, I believe, holds the record for writing magic books.) Used copies are on the secondary market for about $20.00.

You may want to have a look for John Carney's books Carneycopia and The Book of Secrets.
Unfortunately they are out of print but they come up here in the For Sale section and also on the large auction site that begins with an "E" and ends in "bay". Excellent material from an excellent magician and teacher.

So was Pat Page, and, he worked in a kilt. --Jay Marshall was a Scot, too. He didn't work in a kilt, but he TAUGHT playing the bag pipes.

I got Mark Wilson's book on Ebay last week for 4 bucks including shipping and receiving. Even if you had a digital copy, the cost of paper and ink would cost more to print. Lots of ex library books online for cheap.

It’s a shame I can’t make a recommendation based on what I’ve read (I haven’t had the pleasure of reading your material) to another user without being criticized while someone else pushes their own agenda. I was already turned off from all of the self promoting I see in these forums. I have a lot of respect for the people here. Unfortunately, if people want to brush opinions aside so easily (especially people of HL’s stature) I’m in the wrong place. Cheers |

In my opinion - someone giving advice when that someone doesn't know all, or the obvious ("I haven’t had the pleasure of reading your material") is not giving good advice. Just my obviously biased opinion. Seems to me that people fairly new in magic might be better off paying attention to people who DO KNOW ALL - or most - like Michael Vincent - who just said in a Facebook post, "Thank heavens for Harry Lorayne and THE MAGIC BOOK!..." (At least new user Joshpo6 knows about THE MAGIC BOOK.) I would strongly suggest, Mr. Featherly, that you do start reading the "good stuff"!
Since I have over 80 years of experience in/with card magic - compared to your 9 new-user-posts experience, and have written many more books on card magic over the decades - it would seem that I have MUCH MORE right to state my opinions on the subject than you do. An opinion that certainly has more knowledge/experience, etc., behind it, and is certainly MUCH MORE important for newbies in card magic to pay attention to. JUST MY OPINION.
