Hi folks,
I was going to post this on Secret Sessions, but I couldn't find it. Prob'ly cause it's secret. If we get into nuts and bolts I'll ask the moderators to move this thread. 1. Somewhere I read about a stepped Braue Reversal. I can't remember where, and I wonder if someone can either describe the move or suggest a reference. Basically you start as in an ordinary BR, but when you roll the bottom packet over on top of the original top packet, you step the new top packet (to the right???). You hold your right fingers together, thus (partially, at least), hiding the move. I want to use something like this in Walter Gibson's trick "Double Reverse" (in Anneman's card magic): there's a point where magician and spectator are both shuffling their half-packs; the spectator's attention is (hopefully) on his own shuffling, and the magician is turning face-up the bottom card of her face-down deck. I want this to be as unobtrusive as possible, and I thought the stepped BR might be the way to go. 2. Can anyone suggest a simple-ish cut (just two half-decks being reversed) that's noiseless and doesn't require a lot of motion? I need this in a couple of tricks where I want to move the top or bottom card of the deck to the middle. Yes, I know there's a name for this!: The Pass! But I don't want to put in the years of effort needed to learn the P-Thing. I just want something that won't call attention to itself, again while the spectator's attention is on looking at a card, shuffling, etc. Maybe a swing-cut would be sufficient, but I'm not sure that's subtle enough. Thanks as always for any help people can offer! Best Regards, Bob |

Harry Lorayne published a Braue Reversal Variation that uses a cover card in Deck-Sterity and also in Best of Friends. I don't know if that is the item in question but you should have the books anyway if you don't.
I'm sorry but your second question has me confused. You need to cut the cards without anyone seeing you do it? You could do a Charlier Cut behind their shoulder as you reach out to touch them. Works great if they are the only spectator or if their position screens the others from seeing it. Is there a table nearby? Drop your hand with the cards below the tabletop and do a Charlier Cut as soon as there is shade.
It's never crowded on the extra mile....

Tortuga, I own Best of Friends and many other books and DVD's by Mr. Lorayne. All of them are good. I'll take a look and see if what you describe is what I need.
As for your second paragraph -- perhaps I'm reading you wrong, but it sounds like you're deliberately twisting my words to have a little fun at my expense. If I'm wrong, my apologies. |

Hi again, Tortuga,
I overreacted to what was probably just friendly joking around on your part. I apologize. So let me clarify my second question. I'm simply interested in people's thoughts, based on their performing experience (of which I have little) about whether spectators are likely to notice, while they're shuffling cards or otherwise occupied, if the magician cuts the deck in her hands. In other words, does the spectator being occupied provide enough misdirection that they won't notice the cut. The only cut I know is the swing cut, and maybe that's good enough. Or perhaps there's some other cut that's less obvious. Thanks, Bob |

No worries Bob, I didn't intend to ridicule, just clarify. If you make a habit of cutting the cards frequently they will not notice. Remember it is about attitude. If you look sneaky or make it look like a move then they will burn you. Harry constantly cuts and shuffles during and before his magic. One reason it is impressive as the cards appear hopelessly mixed.

Thanks for your understanding Tortuga.
Your point about Harry is well-taken: if the magician is always cutting and shuffling then the cards will always appear to be mixed, and any necessary cutting that you don't want the audience to notice will recede into the background. |
