Just watched magicorthodoxy review https://youtu.be/bEVDcMJD67A . It appear that it is just a force( of sock cards ) but it could be any force and a display of real socks. If you are an arts and craft person you could do this with socks that cost only a few dollars and printing your own sock cards. So,I am surprised that it is referred to as the best trick of Magic Live. Or do I have this wrong?

Well, after all the dust has settled and everything is clear I have to say I think this is a lovely bit.
Please check regularly if you are becoming the type of magician Jerry Seinfeld jokes about. (This applies to mentalists as well.)

Ahhhh the magic Café
Is this trick earth shattering? No absolutely not Is his trick FUN and IMPRESSIVE for lay audience? YOU BET. If you perform for real audiences, you might like this. If the only audience you have is your mirror then, forget it!
Tricks aren't important...people are!!!

Great option I believe. Summertime? Who wears trousers in summer? No one.

I have seen this now.
The sock cards are great quality and the whole idea is funny and unusual. The method, however, sucks. It is simply not reliable enough for pros. Imagine trying this method on a bunch of Bar Mitzvah kids, or a spectator who is a bit out-to-look-clever. Happily, there are plenty of other methods you can use to achieve the same result. These are not described in the instructions, but unless you're a beginner you'll be able to think of any number of way to get to the end reveal. |

Most "REAL pros" don't need to be told that they can (and will) take whatever trick they see and change and adapt it to their use as a "pro." Some "pros", however are still "cookie cutter" magicians and have to follow directions or buy self-working magic tricks from the store because they don't know how to adapt principles to anything new and different.
Michel Huot allows for this in his FULL directions, including a method for a rank beginner who only knows how to do the "cross card cut". Don't miss out on this because you are afraid it will be too difficult for you. The "double timed force" was brand new to me until Michel explained it on his video, and it took me some practice time to learn that even at my advanced age as a geezer magician, I could still learn new tricks.

I received mine last week and I'm happy with my purchase. However, the method employed for the force is not my cup of tea and I also didn't like the "magicky" ending with having all the cards match.
However, I started playing around with different forces and presentations and feel I'm finally getting on the right track. This is a good piece of commercial 'light' mentalism that might be well-suited for cocktail strolling situations. I'm not sure yet if it's strong enough for a parlor show, but with the right presentation anything is possible. Either way, what's nice is that there aren't any clothing restrictions (just make sure your pants are on the longish side). So, you can pick your spots when you want to perform it without feeling uncomfortable (you need to wear socks anyway). At the end of the day, most performers will figure out how to tailor this trick to suit their own indiviudal needs and persona. |

I haven't fully scriped it yet, but am leaning towards an anniversary waltz "couple" type presentation whereby a married couple tries to find the only MATCHING pair from apparently 30 different socks ("Who washes the clothes the most between you?"...."I'll bet John loses more socks when he does the wash than yourself." blah, blah, blah.)
I have several good forces in my arsenal where the spectators can change their mind several times before eventually deciding on their final selections, which provides some good interplay. After they've made their choices it apparently looks like they've both missed (they are holding an unmatched pair). But you continue on... "It may seem on the surface that you both failed, but actually you found them...Those really ARE my favorite socks. In fact, I'm even wearing them right now...Here take a look for yourself!" To pull this off, you'll need to have a very good (convincing) false shuffle because you want to convince them 100% that the cards were truly mixed. Then, you'll want to choose a force where they can see that if they had selected a different card then outcome would have been different. This all helps to sell the impossibility of the feat. Note: if you're going to do this like me by forcing two cards out of 30, then you'll need to remove the matching card that's on the face of the pack (because they'll be seeing this card for too long plus the two matching mates of the predicted socks). You can also say that you have 36 cards because people can't tell the difference between the actual amount (27 cards) vs. 36. If you're worried that they'll accidentally spot a duplicate don't be. Before you show them the "what if" cards, just angle them towards yourself (first) and handle these other options very casually. |
