In terms of watching, Johhny Paul's routine fooled me even after I was wise to what he was doing. However, I agree with several of the above posts about doing your own routine. I would actually be very pleased if I could do Vernon's or Johnny Paul's, but those just are not my style. Of course I use elements from routines I have seen, but still, to be most effective and comfortable performing, I use my own build.

I saw Cellini perform his c&b routine in his lecture. I believe it is in his lecture notes. Cellini uses an "elevator up" move as he described it, that is not commonly seen in many routines. His routine is entertaining, as well with a large ending.

To me, anyone who can take this classic, perform it well and entertain a lay audience, is great!
Now for the real answer: the two that I find the most entertaining to me are Tim Ellis' (the milkshake final load fooled me badly!) and Johnny Thompson's. Johnny's is basically the history of the cups and balls with him impersonating all the greatest c&b performers (Malini, Pops Krieger, Vernon, etc) Rick

If you saw Ricky Jay and his 52 Assistants, you saw a wonderful routine with true historic references.
As far as performing I'm split between the basic Vernon-style routine and the Indian/Jadoowalla routine. I think I have more fun doing the Indian cups, but the audiences react about the same to both.

I am not sure what method it was, vut they used three cups as usual and also their hat. they did a usual cups and balls and then made fruit appear.

Tommy wonder's Two cups routine is the best I have ever seen. I don't think that the fact that people know he took the bag on the table is a problem. If you think of a classical cups and balls routine, that finishes with, say 3 billard balls, people will also know he loaded them under the cups, and if they were'nt on the table, they had to be on the magician.
That's two different kinds of effects, and in my oppinion, the fact that all was on the table is stronger, even if it is the starting of an explaination.

Gertner's can only be done with a servante or lapping (want to walk around with some heavy balls in your pants???) Vernon's or Johnny Paul's can be done standing or sitting ona platofrm or surrounded close up. I do a version of Vernon's-but not nearly so well.

Vernon, Ramsay, Kaps, Skinner Johny Paul's, Gertner, and Ricky Jay are my personal favorites when it comes to Cups and Balls...Charlie Miller and Frank Garcia need to be mentioned as well! And when it comes to shear technique...Bill Okal!

Ricky Jay's act was the first time I ever really believed that there was art within magic--to briefly broach John Carney's tome.

Tim Ellis's Run around Sue cups and balls routine is quite entertaining.
I also like Dave Williamson's cups and balls |

I like a lot of different routines each expresses the interpretation of the originator one I do like is bob reeds. His comment in his manuscript sums it up for me, that everyone elses cups and balls is the penultimate cups and balls and only your own is the ultimate for you but in turn it will be penultimate for others.
I think that learning cups and balls should be manditory as it teaches so much about magic |

I learned a lot from pat page's routine using any 3 cups at hand and rolled up bills. his time misdirection makes the final loads a complete suprise. he doesn't rush. really works great with lay people. borrowing the props is also a nice touch. joey

I enjoyed Shawn Farqhuar's routine, I've was fooled by Tommy Wonder's two cups and pom-pom's, No body can come close to Williamson's cup and ball routine when he is in performing mode, Johnny Paul's is the most orginal routine I have ever seen with the cups and balls. I hear Mullica's routine is based off of Johnny Pauls, is it in print or on video anywhere?
THe one I perform right now is Defiance II by Reed McClintock. Absolutely slays my restaurant audiences. Not that great for street shows when surrounded, but I have found it is excllent for when your audience is straight in front of you like at a table for patrons. |

I do cups and balls with a few paper dixie cups and a wadded up napkin if I have to. Buying the super expensive ones is silly.

With regard to their videos, I wish some of these really good performers would do themselves a favor, and record the performance section with real laymen, and not some collected cadre of retarded unbiquitous retreads. I believe their material would be instantly legitimized in a way that it wouldn't otherwise. Case in point: Card Stunts--Gregory Wilson. |
