Hi,

I'm working on a stage act and for the climax I need to vanish from stage right and reappear stage left.
I'm looking for a self operated way, if that ever exists, as I'm working alone.
Ideally the set up should be as simple as possible, I mean no big box or table.

My first idea was along the line of D. Copperfield illusion when he crosses back through the great Wall of China : a kind of white screen depicting me as a silhouette, then the screen collapses and I'm gone.
Problem is I can't figure out how to integrate this in my scenario...

Can someone point me toward other systems to self vanishing ?

From France,

Lawrens

I don't know if you perform silk productions, but a production of a six foot silk, raised up above your head as it is produced, then dropped to the floor as you "vanish" is pretty easy to accomplish. Perhaps almost at the same time another six foot silk begins to rise out of a similar box or tube on the other side of the stage. When it has reached its full height, you appear behind it, and finish the production from there. That part is tricky, but you have gravity to help. Now, are you clever enough to figure out how to get from one point to the other without being seen?

Along with the silk idea.... could it be a one of those gags where a really long silk is produced center stage.... you walk off stage left still pulling the silk and it is continually be pulled and you walk back on from stage right continuing to pull the silk!

You should ask my father.. He vanished one time and still hasnt reappeared. All joking aside. Its gonna be hard for anyone here to suggest a vanishing solution while not knowing about your stage, theater, etc . Most of that stuff is pretty location specific.

You will have to manage time between vanish and appearance. Ideally it should be quick. One way to do this is to use shadow. For example, on each side of stage you have a raised see-through platform with semi transparent screen on it. You step behind screen on one side and bright lights come on behind each one. On one side your shadow is clearly seen on the screen. On the other side there is no shadow. A few moments later your shadow disappears from the one screen and appears on other. Then you instantly step from behind that screen having teleported from one side to another.

You can find details on the platform in Tarbell volume 7 or Dan Harlan's Tarbell 90 video at penguin magic. Key thing is to audience you are isolated on the platform, that is, they believe they would see you if you stepped off.

I actually found a solution.

I used to perform with a Jack Murray's BA vanishing table, which is great, but now I need a lighter, more portable solution.
I'll still use BA as the main method, but without any big apparatus : I will disappear by the means of the "fence" principle. I'm learning the basics described by James Hodge, french master magician, designer and inventor (rip master).
For the vanish itself, a simple throwing of a big scarf in front of me will be great.

I also slightly modified my scenario, as I realized that my reappearance didn't have to be necessarily located at stage left...
So far, so good, I'm happy with the idea Smile

Here's a short video of my act if you're interested :

Thanks again for the suggestions.
