I was born on February 6, 1917, in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. My parents were both of Jewish ancestry.

I was discovered by the operatic tenor Richard Tauber on a trip to Vienna in 1934, following my time as a student at a Swiss boarding school.

Tauber invited me to sing in his new operetta, Der Singende Traum (The Singing Dream), at the Theater an der Wien.
