Not George Burns, Cliff, but Mark Boody gets to go next for guessing correctly: it’s Phil Silvers!

The following would have been my next clues:

Throughout the ‘70s and early ‘80s, I continued to make guest appearances in TV sitcoms, including The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, and Happy Days.

I also starred in various TV specials and talk shows such as The Bob Hope Show, The Jackie Gleason Show, The Merv Griffin Show, The Dick Cavett Show, The David Frost Show, and The Tonight Show.

In 1980, I participated in The Friar's Club Tribute to Milton Berle alongside Don Rickles, Dick Shawn, Walter Matthau, Jack Lemmon, George Burns, Karl Malden, and Robert Culp.

In my personal life, I was a compulsive gambler. While staying in Reno, Nevada, in the 1950s, I would often gamble all night. I also suffered from chronic depression, and had a nervous breakdown in 1962 while performing in Spain.

I suffered a stroke during the run of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum in August 1972. I was left with slurred speech, but despite my poor health, I continued working. My final role was in an episode of CHiPs in 1983.

On November 1, 1985, I died in my sleep in Century City, California. I was interred at Mount Sinai Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles.

You’re up, Mark.

Don't know if that's correct, Cliff, but that's a good guess! Nobody came to mind for me.

Not joe or steve.

My wife grace was a teacher, specializing in teaching children
to lip read.

I was not known to talk much myself, when I died Dorothy parker
commented "how can you tell?"

My father was a justice of the piece, that proved uniquely useful to
me starting my career.

I had a pretty successful political career, I only lost one election
in my life, for a school board in Massachusetts.

I would even be elected governor of Massachusetts!

I got national fame for my handling of a police strike.

The only other previous Massachusetts governors I know of are Mitt Romney and Deval Patrick.

Not mitt or deval, but you know more Massachusetts governors than I do.
The next one should make it easy.

The nation was shocked when I announced... "i do not choose to run in 1928"

Allow me to interject a bit of personal trivia: There’s a reason why I’m familiar with the three governors whose names I guessed. Michael Dukakis was governor of Massachusetts when I was a college student in Boston. Years later, my wife and I lost our livelihood as music composers in New York City due to 9/11. We relocated to Gloucester, Massachusetts, where we completely reinvented ourselves by designing and presenting educational magic programs. This was while Mitt Romney was governor, and we did really well in the school, library and daycare markets. That is, until a few years later, when Deval Patrick was elected the new Massachusetts governor. Almost overnight, he destroyed the school budgets, leaving us without job prospects, and we were forced to relocate to another state (Washington) and start all over again.

OK, back to the game! I have no idea who didn’t choose to run in 1928.

Interesting trivia Arthur, I've never heard of deval Patrick. It's not Roosevelt.
Here's the last two clues.

My secretary of commerce herbert Hoover succeeded me.

I died of a heart attack in 1933 I was only 60.
